Out with the OLD, in with the NEW! What modern education is capable of

in #steemiteducation7 years ago

Once upon a time in a land not so far away, teachers stood in front of the classroom in a 'one-man-show' kind of way, rambling down the lesson for the day, gave students activities to do and expected dead silence. Children weren't motivated to work in groups as it was shameful to get ideas from others. The teacher did the talking and the students were expected to believe everything that they were told, no questions asked. Teachers were there to teach and students were there to learn. That's it.

Teaching methods were mostly drilling and repeating everything like a parrot. Corporal punishment was there to get the rest done - a scare tactic, a disciplinary tactic and a mind-your-manners tactic. Resources were the library, the blackboard and boring textbooks that contained mainly writing, no pictures.

Every year was the same. Every rule stayed the same and every assessment criteria stayed the same.

It didn't only stay the same for the learners, but also for the teachers. They had very strict rules to abide by too.

Well, I can honestly say that I couldn't have blamed them for being so grumpy!

As the years went by, not a lot have changed. Teachers just continued to teach their students the same way they've been taught in school with a few changes here and there. There were no immediate changes but gradually things started to progress.

Newer generation teachers are now able to use the latest technology to present their lessons. Teaching methods have developed into teaching strategies. Sit down and keep quiet has developed into stand up and share. Blackboards are now electronic whiteboards that functions as computers. The Internet has taken over and multimedia presentations became easier to do than old-school preparations. The need for single-line chairs and tables are out and creating magic with fellow students are in.

It's NOT a flawless system, there are still challenges and

parental involvement have hit rock bottom!

What's important is that change took place and there was a shift in how things were done and how they are being done now. The sad part of it is that society changes too. It's getting sicker and sicker by the day, causing our children and fellow teachers to become sick with it. Students are no longer in school to learn and teachers are no longer in school to teach.

If modern technology can be used in a way to promote education and to heal society, then that would be the first step in a positive direction.

Can't believe the rules they had. Were they teachers or slaves?

I feel like laughing out loud at the sad state of humans in history. It is better now, but we still have many issues to address. Wherever there are humans, there will always be issues of integrity and abuse.

Many thanks for sharing :)

Greetings @bdmomuae from a fellow MAW member. I enjoyed the look back in time especially the rules for 1872. My father grew up attending school in a small country one room school house in the 1930s and 40s. The stories he tells about his education are very similar to these old rules.

Thanks @gregory-f, it's really interesting to hear about stories from the old days. Those rules were quite strict but I'm sure it made sense back then. I might have been fired on the first day of teaching if those rules we still rules today, lol.

Some of those old ways worked, I still know my times tables better than most, these were drilled into us in the old standard 1, now grade 3.
Great post, thanks for sharing.

Yes, I can't disagree, some of them definitely worked...but they couldn't get Geography into me no matter what they tried, lol.
Thanks @rynow ;-)

Modern education system is very materialistic in nature. Because of this modern education, we are becoming more selfcentrick.
We forget humanity, selflessness behaviour . We love only OurSelfs. We forget our society , our culture, our world. We need more generous education system, which teach us to love others in a selfless way, which united us with others, rather than scattered.

I can't disagree with all you've said, but I have to say that the old education system wasn't any better. At least in the modern system, children are being taught about other cultures and religions which they did not dare teach before. Different cultures are now sitting together in one classroom and the hope is that they learn to accept one another. Before, they were separated. It's quite a big improvement although people are making it "ugly", as I've said in the post, society is changing and education should change with it to make it stronger.
