Should Handwriting be Preserved?

The presence of technology does facilitate some activities that used to be manual. One of them, writing. Before handwriting is a very important thing, especially for the students, now it is different.

I did a socialization program at one of the schools in Banda Aceh

The school exams were replaced with CBT (computer-based test), notes replaced with blackboard photos until the schoolwork was replaced with print or e-mail.

Human wrote by hand since 3200 BC. Initially, the writing is made in the form of pictographs or symbols on the walls of the cave. In the 7th century BC, these symbols developed into a universal alphabet.

In the past, handwriting did have an important role for communication, reading personality, to the arts. Ever try asking parents, how do they communicate before there is a call? Yep, they must be communicating through handwritten letters.

Unfortunately, the existence of handwriting that once needed more faded. The presence of laptops, mobile phones, tablets, and applications in it, makes people more comfortable typing than writing. This is evidenced by the results of a poll conducted by the Zetizen team.

As much as 38 percent of Zetizens predict handwriting soon replaced when digital typing. One of the Zetizens who started leaving handwriting was Neysa Feralda, a student at Airlangga University. On campus, lecturers are more often taught by using presentation slides.

Due to the need to record quickly, Neysa eventually prefers photographing the slides rather than taking notes in the book. "If the record is long. So, I'm a photo. Instead of taking notes, photographing the lecturers' slides is clearer and does not make a mistake, "Neysa explained.

In contrast to Neysa, Rafi Kurnia, Zetizen from SMAN 16 Surabaya, admitted, his writing habit was lost due to the demands of the system at his school. "All the tasks at school mostly just type and print or directly send an e-mail to the teacher," said Rafi.

According to him, typing does tend to be more practical and do not make tired as handwriting. Practicality and speed be the reason the Zetizen choose typing or photographing rather than writing. In addition, according to 14 percent Zetizen, the storage of typed or photo is indeed easier.

No need to carry heavy books-heavy because of all the records already on the phone. Do friends want to see notes? Just send photos or typed results via social media or e-mail.

Cambridge University even plans to replace all handwritten exam into the laptop-based test. "From year to year, the university must laboriously read student handwriting. It continues to be a problem, "said Dr. Sarah Pearsall, Cambridge University History Department lecturer quoted from The Telegraph.

In your opinion, should handwriting be preserved?

Very interesting question! Since I started using computers in the 90s, my handwriting has been deteriorating from beautiful into something like a drunken spider trail. But it's very important - hand writing is something individual, something that once it is learned cannot be taken away. It's about self expression. You can't just unplug it like a machine. So preserve it!

True, I also feel the same way. At this time it seems very difficult to get a chance to write by hand. Moreover, the current job is also using a keyboard.

Handwriting should definitely be preserved! The development of digital stuff doesn't make a good handwriting obsolet, because my handwriting is a mirror of my personality. So, when you force kids in school to just type the text into their laptops you prevent them from experiencing a great way to express their individuality. In Germany there is the same intention to replace handwriting, at least by writing only in block capitals. This is so disturbing for me, because block capitals you need only for filling in forms at governmental offices. Is this how we want to see our kids in future - forms filling human robots? I am sorry, maybe I am going a bit to far here, but this subject drives me very emotional.
When I met my husband for the first time, there was a power cut due to problems in electricity (happens often in Egypt), so he sent me his love letters handwritten on a paper. They had a lot of spelling mistakes, corrected with an eraser an re-written, since he is not a native speaker in english (me neither), but you can't imagine what that kind of feeling this caused in me. LOVE, simply LOVE. Because it was personal, individual and took obviously more time and effort than just typing a digital message.

PLEASE people, keep your handwriting!

Hi @laylahsophia .. Nice to see you here..
Some time ago, I met a friend. We are talking about handwriting. According to him, one's handwriting form reflects the personality. But I do not understand how to judge. But surely, I agree if handwriting continues to be preserved. When working with a laptop, we should have time in a week maybe once to write by hand.

nyan ban digital literacy perspective, bereeeeh !
