The weird Aye-aye - Reading and questions for kids

in #steemiteducation5 years ago

All across the world we find very very strange creatures.  Big ones, small ones, thin ones and fat ones.  Some live on land and some in the water.

Today I am going to tell you about a very strange creature called the Aye-Aye (you pronouns it eye eye).  We will first learn about this little 'monster' and then you will answer some questions and do your own research.

Look at that face - only a mother can love that face hahaha.  You cannot really decide if it is a cute little animal or a scary one, but it sure does look a little like something out of a Harry Potter or sci-fi movies.

But believe it or not, this is not a make believe creature, you will really find them in the rainforest of Madagascar.

The Aye Aye is not only the largest nocturnal primate in the world but is also one of the most unique and is in fact so strange in appearance, that it was thought to be a large species of Squirrel when it was first discovered.

A 'nocturnal' animal is an animal that are active during the night, so you will not see them during the day, but if you stroll around at night, you will see their big eyes glisten when you shine your flashlight on them.  Their eyes are adapted so that they can see well at night.  They live in trees so that they are safe from predators.

If you look at their little hands, you will see something very strange.  They have a thin, very long middle finger.

This truly looks like something out of a scary movie, but they use that finger to grab the fruits they eat and also pull the insects out of the holes in the trees, so this finger comes in very handy.  They are omnivores, which mean they eat plants and meat.

Unfortunately there are always people that believe some 'far fetched' story and the legend goes that if an Aye-Aye points his long finger at you, you will die.  This is not true, but because some people believe it, a lot of people start killing the Aye-Ayes and now they are an endangered specie.

Answer the following questions

  • Explain the meaning of the following words.  If you do not know the meaning, look it up and try and explain it in your own words.  predator   omnivore   nocturnal   endangered
  • Where will you find the Aye-Aye?
  • What is strange about their hands?
  • Why can we say their hands are adapted for a special function?
  • Watch the video and then compile at least 5 questions on the video or write down a few facts that you learned
