in #steemiteducation5 years ago
Leopards are part of the cat family, Felidae. The scientific name for a leopard is Panthera pardus.

Today we will learn more about leopards.  A beautiful animal and a big cat.  Make sure you read the information by yourself and also watch the videos for extra information

Some people get confused with leopards and cheetahs, but even if it seems that they look the same, there are major differences.

Leopards can have a cream and gold spotted fur, but they can also be black - the black ones are many times mistaken for being a panther, which they are not.

When leopards are grown, they live on their own and have their own area they will live and hunt in and try and avoid other leopards and in that way avoid getting into fights over territory.

A leopard can climb a tree very well, can easily jump from one place to another, are very good hunters and can run fast.

The tail is important to help with balance and it can be just as long as the body.  It also help the leopard to make sharp turns without falling over while running and hunting.

The prefer hunting at night and like other cats they are 'nocturnal'.  Once they catch their prey, they will many times drag it up in a tree to protect it from other predators eating it and will return to the tree every time they are hungry.

Once the female is ready to have babies, she gives off a scent and leave it on trees and leaves and will also make a specific sound for the male to find her. A female leopard can give birth to up to three cubs at a time who will stay with their mom until they are about 2 years old and will then go live on their own.

Some people believe that the bones and whiskers of leopards can heal sick people. Many leopards are killed each year for their fur and body parts and this is one reason why the leopard is an endangered animal. While they were previously found in the wild in a number of areas around the world, their habitat is largely restricted to sub-Saharan Africa with small numbers also found in India, Pakistan, Malaysia, China and Indochina.

It is so sad that humans destroy so much on earth.  We need to protect our animals and plants and help them not to become extinct.  Unfortunately there are always people that do not care about nature and the fact that they destroy it.

If you like to draw, you can draw a picture of a leopard or do extra research on this beautiful animal.  You can also read more about how there are good people that try and protect the leopard.
