Solid materials around us - Raw and manufactured/processed by man - Science Gr 3-4

in #steemiteducation7 years ago

You have learned that everything is made of matter.  Matter is found on earth in three stages and can also undergo phase changes.

If you cannot remember the stages refresh your memory on https://steemit.com/steemiteducation/@anneke/matter-and-the-phase-of-matter-science-gr-4

  • Look around you and choose any 10 solid materials (a ball, a book, a calculator etc.)
  • Look at each one, describe it and say from what type of material it is made

We choose specific materials for specific functions - you are not going to make a school desk out of glass and gold because it will break too easily, you will use wood and steel.

Raw and manufactured materials in our lives

Raw material  comes from nature.  We can cut down a tree and make/manufacture a table or paper.  Which one is the raw material and which is the manufactured material?

  • Try and think of 2 more ideas where you use raw material to manufacture an item.

We usually use the term raw material to refer to something that has not been processed (changed) yet.  We pick the raw vegetables and process it by cooking it .

  •  Say if the following is a raw material or has it been processed.  - wood, oil, handbag, jersey, cake, meat, honey, bread, furniture, machines, jewellery, diamond

Raw materials are the materials around us in nature in an unchanged state, like trees, oil, coal, diamonds, gold etc.

  • Look at the picture and try and explain in your own words how raw material is turned into manufactured  material/product

More examples of raw materials used to make other products

  • Find a picture or video for each of the following examples or the process how it is made
  1. Wood can be used to make paper.
  2. Animal skin can be used to make shoes and handbags and jackets.
  3. Coal and oil are used to make plastic and generate electricity and making paints.
  4. Wool from a sheep can be made to make jerseys.
  5. Clay can be moulded into different objects like tea cups and vases.
  6. Sand can be heated to a very high temperature and make glass.

You are going to write an essay on how paper is made - you can do your own research - it must start with the raw material , the process taking place to change it into paper and the end result/manufactured product.

You can also write about the recycling of paper.

You can do your own research or first watch the video

Fun activity - Lets make our own paper (you can use it to write a letter to somebody and can decorate it with anything you want)

Properties of materials

All material have different properties.  This means it can be breakable or you can bend it or see throught it or it is very strong, or burns easily etc.

  •  In the picture you see different properties of materials. Name two examples of materials to fit with each property or characteristic like soft =pillow and cat

Enrichment work

When you understand all of this work you can play some games and read extra information for enrichment on http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks2/science/materials/

@anneke you are a natural born teacher who can reach children through your teaching skills. I loved how you presented your lesson plan on materials. I especially loved how you make the students think about what they learned in activities and thinking tasks. Making paper is a terrific ideas. Now I want to go make some. Thank-you Anneke for a wonderful post!!!

Evolution man

Very nice post anneke, really understandable to all.

Thank you
