"Polly wants a cracker, Polly wants a cracker", the parrot keeps on saying and you find it very cute.  It can get a bit annoying after a while and just like other pets, a pet parrot also needs love and attention and can leave a mess for you to clean up.

Lets learn more about parrots.

  • Can you remember a few of the facts mentioned in the video?

You maybe know or have seen a few different types of parrots, but there are lots more than what you think.  372 different species to be precise.

  • Do research and choose at least 5 species parrots that you do not know and find 2 facts on each.

Most parrots are beautiful bright colours and they are seen as the most intelligent of all the birds.  They have a curved beak that can bite open very hard seeds and also big claws/talons with which the can hold onto the tree trunk or hold the food while eating it.

A lot of the parrots can be taught to talk with a lot of patience.  Have a look at some parrots that have learn to speak.  They can be very entertaining.

Most of the parrots live of different seeds, but they will also eats fruits, flowers or insects.

Parrots can live very long, so if you decide to keep one as a pet, you need to be fully committed and prepared to clean up and stand the noise.

Parrots such as the budgerigar (budgie) and cockatiel are popular as pets.
Some parrot species can live for over 80 years.

There is one type of parrot that cannot fly, the Kakapo.  Sadly these parrots are endangered, which means there is not a lot of them left.  They are nocturnal, so they are active at night.  They feed on seeds and nectar and they are considered the heaviest parrot on earth.

  • Watch the video and answer the questions.

  • What is another name for the Kakapo.
