Do you obsess about things a lot? You may have 'OCD' - Information for kids

in #steemiteducation6 years ago (edited)

Many people of all ages (kids included) will think about a lot of things the whole time and will be afraid the something will happen to them.  They are also scared that if things are not done in a certain manner that something will go wrong. These can all show that they have an 'obsession'.

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is a mental disorder in which people have unwanted and repeated thoughts, feelings, ideas, sensations (obsessions), and behaviors that drive them to do something over and over (compulsions). Often the person carries out the behaviors to get rid of the obsessive thoughts

People suffering from OCD will have certain 'rituals' like tapping on the table or stepping over the cracks on the floor etc, which they believe will prevent bad things from happening.

They worry about things and this disorder makes everything seems worse than what it really is.

OCD happens because of a problem in the brain's message system. The problem causes worry and fear messages to form by mistake. It also causes the strong feeling of having to do a ritual to make things safe.

Scientists are still busy figuring out exactly how OCD starts, but it can be inherited from the parents or it can start after a brain infection, but they know for sure that it does not happen because of something that the parents or the child did wrong.

Many kids will know that they experience a lot of fears and that they do certain things to make it better, which only make them feel better for a while, but they will not always talk to someone about it, because they will feel embarrassed.  It will not help you at all to keep quiet.  Even though you may feel shy, it is better to talk about it and get help, than to be in a constant state of worry.

If you do not get help, your worries and your rituals, will keep on taking up more time and eventually it will have a huge influence on your daily life and will also interfere with your school work and concentration.  This is not something you can fix yourself, you need help.

Remember that it is not your fault that you feel like that.  It is best to tell your parents that they can take you to a doctor that will be able to help you.

The doctor will ask a few questions and once you are diagnosed with OCD, they can determine a treatment program for you.

If you have your family and friends that support you, it will help a lot and they can also help take your mind off things, so that you do not concentrate only on your worries the whole day.  Do not suffer on your own.  Tell somebody and get help.  Your life will be so much better if you have help.

This is a good article to help parents to detect symptoms of OCD as well as getting the general public to be more understanding to the people suffering OCD.

Well written , you have said it all. A case study is a baby who is crawling, he/she will be scared to walk, but if his/her parents encourage her.like staying a few distance to him/her and said to collect something he/she like..lol.. I love this..

I have upvoted your post.
