Comprehension Reading worksheet for Gr 1-2
Read the following, make sure you understand what you read and try and answer the questions
(If you cannot answer the question, you must read the piece again and for some questions you will have to think)
Bees are very important insects, but they can also be scary, because they buzz and can sting you.
When they sting you it hurts a lot. Bees will not just sting you, only if they feel threatened.
We need bees. They help spread the pollen from one flower to another and that is needed to make a new flower.
Bees will sit on the flower to suck out the nectar (the sweet juice) which they will use to make honey with. The pollen will get stuck to their bodies and feet and then they will carry it over to the next flower.
Bees are very important to help flowers grow.
Here is a picture of a bee covered in pollen which he will take to the next flower.
- Why are bees important to us?
- How do the bee carry the pollen from one flower to another?
- Do you know what pollen is? If you do not know, read the next piece and then answer the question.
Pollen is the fine powder produced by flowers that causes plants to form seeds - plants need the seeds so that new plants will grow - think of an apple. The apple has seeds inside of it and new apple trees can grow from these seeds.
- Name any five other fruits that has seed in it and try and describe what the seeds look like.
Peter is a beekeeper. He has special boxes in which he keeps the bees. Here they make their honey and look after their babies. If Peter wants to take out the honey, he has to dress in special clothes so that the bees do not sting him.
The worker bees go outside every day to collect nectar and to pollinate the flowers.
Bees have a special tongue that sucks up the nectar and they store the nectar in their throats.
Honey bees and Bumble bees live in colonies or hives
Each bee colony has a queen. She lies all the eggs. The worker bees build the honeycomb, collect food and look after the larvae (babies).
- Where do bees live?
- What does the queen do?
- What is the work of the worker bees?
- Do you like honey? What can we use honey for?

Thank you
Anneke, congratulations on your innovative post. Although I do not have any children in this particular age group (mine are long grown up), I have a niece that is going to start school shortly. I will be sure to share your lessons with her.
Thank you very much - I will keep on sharing worksheets for the little ones but will also do for higher grades - as soon as my brain is off school work then I can post something on Steemit :)
