Some frogs were happily hopping along when they saw a deep pit.  Two of the frogs wanted to see what was inside the pit, but while they were trying to have a look, the one slipped and grabbed hold of the other one and they both fell into the deep pit.

They got a huge fright and knew they could not stay inside the pit.  The other frogs were shouting at them to jump as high as they could to try and get out.

After a while when the other frogs saw that they will not be able to get out, they told them to save their energy while they try and make a plan, but the frogs in the pit did not listen and tried jumping out of the pit.

They got so tired that one of them dropped from weariness and died.

The other frog just kept on jumping, even though the frogs outside the pit shouted he must stop jumping and save his energy.  They shouted that he will not be able to get out by himself.

He did not listen and just kept on jumping and jumping until he jumped out of the pit.

The other frogs could not believe that he never stopped trying and they asked him "Why did you keep on jumping, even when we told you it is not possible and you must rather save your energy?"

The frog sat there quietly, looking at them and reading their lips and then said "I am deaf.  I saw you shouting and waving and I thought you were cheering me on to try harder.  It felt so good that you were on my side, so I just tried harder."

That day the frogs learned that if you get encouragement from somebody, you will succeed even if the odds look like they are against you.

Answer the questions:

  1. How does it make you feel if somebody tells you to rather give up?
  2. How does it make you feel if somebody encourages you?
  3. What characteristics does a good friend have?
  4. This story has a lesson - how can you apply this lesson in your life?
  5. What should you do if somebody discourages you?

For fun you can watch and listen to another story about two frogs.  Is there a lesson to be learned from this story?
