From my last article:

Face to Face Communication:

Miscommunication starts with underestimating the power and importance of the congruence in our body language, tone of voice and words when we communicate face to face. In other words what you hear, see and feel in the communicated message doesn't send the same message.

Just as imperative as it is for the conductor of an orchestra to ensure an impeccable musical performance from his orchestra so it should be with us when we communicate.

The conductor would not allow an 'out of tune' instrument or 'not on key' note to be played. It is incumbent on us to correct communication, where what we see hear and feel are not congruent.

Look out in my next article, for what happens when face to face is not practical and you lose 55% effectiveness in communication by only relying on tone of voice and the words you use?

If you experience someone saying something that does not match their body language then bring it to that person attention. For example you might see someone who is obviously distressed and a you ask if there is anything you can do to help the, only to be told "I'm fine." My response to that would I hear you say you are fine but what I am seeing is someone who is obviously in distress.
