The Grand Canyon is found in Arizona and many people think of it as one of the great wonders on Earth. This canyon took millions of years to form through the erosion caused by the river.
The Grand Canyon is 277 miles (446 kilometers) in length. At its widest point the Grand Canyon stretches 18 miles (29 kilometers) across. At its narrowest point it stretches 4 miles (6.4 kilometers) across. The Grand Canyon is around 6000 (1800 meters) feet deep.
The Grand Canyon is made up of different types of rocks and this is an excellent place to do research if you are interested in rocks or a geologist. The rock (Schist) right at the bottom of the canyon is about 2 billion years old. The rocks at the top (limestone) is about 230 million years old.

For thousands of years the Indians have been living around the canyon.
John Wesley Powell were the first man to lead and expedition down the Grand Canyon in 1869 and he named it the "Grand canyon" after most people revered to it as the 'Great canyon' or 'Big Canyon'. In 1919 they declared the Grand canyon as a national park.
What is a national park?
an area of countryside, or occasionally sea or fresh water, protected by the state for the enjoyment of the general public or the preservation of wildlife.
