Revision worksheet on English for Gr 3 - adjectives, nouns, adverbs and verbs

Maybe you have forgotten what a noun, adjective, verb and adverb is, and that is fine.  Let me refresh your memory again.

Nouns

We get common nouns (names of things) like dog,cat, cellphone etc and Proper nouns (the names of people and places and we write it with a capital letter) like Peter, South Africa, Mary etc,

• For extra examples watch the video before you complete the questions

• Underline the common nouns and circle the proper nouns in the following sentences

1. I eat an apple every day.
2. Peter plays with the dog outside on the grass.
3. Where are my shoes?
4. Mary ate the whole hamburger.
5. Sophy and her mother bought some new clothes.

Adjectives

Many times in a sentence we will have the noun and then a word that describes the noun or tells you more about the noun 

The man wears a blue shirt.  'Shirt' is the noun (name of an object) and 'blue' tells you more about the shirt, so blue is an adjective.

• Try and find the adjectives in the following sentences: (tip - first find the noun and then the word that tells you more about the noun- that will be the adjective)

1. Peter throws the green ball in the air.
2. The lettuce is very fresh.
3. We eat the sour sweets.
4. The cat has a black body and white feet.
5. Everyday we eat lots of red and green fruits and vegetables

Verb

A verb is easy to recognize - it is also called a doing word or action word, so it is something we can do.  You can ask the question can I.....   if the answer is 'yes' it is a verb.  

Can I dance, or jump or sing?  Yes.  Those are all verbs.  Can you table?  No, table is a noun and not a verb.

• Underline the verbs in the following sentences

1. John jumps on the trampoline.
2. Peter sings in the shower every morning.
3. Joe walks to school every day.
4. I am busy eating my lunch.
5. The dog barks at the cat.

Adverbs

Remember we said an adjective tells you more about a noun?  An adverb tells you more about a verb.  

Do you get confused with an adverb and an adjective?  ad - verb means add to the verb (now you will not confuse the two.  We can say Peter jumps.  'Jump' is your verb, so if you say Peter jumps high - 'high' tells you more about how he jumps, so it is an adverb.

• Find the adverbs in the following sentences (tip - first find the verb and then the word that tells you more about the verb- that will be the adverb)

1. We run very fast around the track.
2. The mother shouts angrily at the kids.
3. My father eats the green apple quickly.
4. The boy cries non-stop.
5. We politely ask to be excused.
