Re-telling stories by using your own words - Language Arts Writing for kids

in #steemiteducation7 years ago (edited)

We can read a story and then re-tell or re-write it using our own words.  We cannot copy it exactly like the original story.  That is called plagiarism.  You can read more about plagiarism here.

Today you are going to read an original story, then have a look at the story that is re-told and then you are going to try and do the same.

You can make the story longer or shorter and even bring in a few of your own ideas or changes (The original story is just a guideline that you are going to use.)

It was a beautiful hot summer day. In the garden of a big white house, a grasshopper was hopping and singing and playing and having a lot of fun.

He was so very happy.  No worries, nothing else to do but to enjoy the day of fun and laughter.

While the grasshopper were jumping and playing he bumped into an ant.  The poor ant was so tired from carrying a piece of corn that he fell on his side.  The ant quickly jumped up, grab the piece of corn and ran away.

What a silly ant, thought the grasshopper.  He is so tired but is still working so hard.  It is a lovely summer day, it is time to play, not run around and work yourself to death.

When the grasshopper saw the ant coming back again to collect some more food, he stopped the ant and asked him why he was working so hard.

"It is summer you silly ant.  We need to have fun." said the grasshopper.

The ant looked at the grasshopper in disbelieve.  He could not understand why the grasshopper were not collecting any food for the winter that will soon come.

"We are collecting and storing food for the winter, and I think it is a good idea if you helped us", the tired ant said to the grasshopper.

The grasshopper thought the ant was being silly since winter was still a far way off and he told the ant that there was more than enough time left for them to collect and store food for the winter.  For now he just wanted to play and enjoy the lovely weather.

The ant was not going to be influenced by the grasshopper, so he excused himself and went on with collecting food to store in his nest.

Before long it was winter time and the grasshopper was so busy playing that he never got around to collecting food.  He was hungry and while scratching around the garden, he came across a very happy ant.

The ant was singing and eating the food he had stored.

O thank goodness, the grasshopper thought, the ant is kind and will give me some food.

When he asked the ant for something to eat the ant said: "You were too lazy to help me collect the food when it was summer and I worked hard.  You were too busy playing around, and now you want me to share my food with you?  I am sorry grasshopper, but there is not enough for both of us."

The grasshopper had to stay hungry and had to go out in the cold every day to try and find something to eat.  But he learned his lesson and promised himself that he will work hard come summer, to be prepared for winter.

We do not always want to work hard, or do our part, but sometimes it is important to first finish our work before we start playing, because that way we will be prepared and stay out of trouble, because we did the right thing.

  • You are now going to do the same with the following video.  Watch the video and then re-tell it in your own words.  We will start off with a very well known story.

This would really get someone to using their imagination. That's something that needs to be done more of these days.

Thank you and I agree - some teachers and parents are so fixed on their kids just studying facts like a parrot, they forget that we need to be able to figure things out for ourselves also
