5 Reasons Why You Should Teach English to Your Children at Early Ages

Teaching English for kids at early ages is very important considering its role in this era. Even English is a foreign language, almost every day children hear their parents say English words such as printer, photocopy, upload, download, and others. Or, they will find some words or phrases in public areas like Stop, No Smoking, Enter, Exit, Open, Close. Since English has been use in many aspects of life by people around the world, English is essential to be introduced for kid from their early childhood. This article focuses only for children in the country whose mother tongues in not English.

Of course, some people might disagree about teaching English for kids at early ages. They argue that teaching English at early ages could burden the kids because English is not their native language. But, that assumption is not totally true. In this Article I give you five reasons to teach English for your children when they are still kids:

  1. Children of age 5-6 years can quickly pronounce a new difficult word. This is due to the kids at those ages have a bit concept in their mind that is different from adults who tend to reject a given concept.

  2. If they learn a foreign language at early ages, their listening comprehension will manifest the most obvious progress and influence on competence of the language in future learning, especially when they continue learning it for a few years. The progress is particularly evident in speaking and listening.

  3. Children who begin to learn a foreign language at preschool ages are likely to have more time available than those begin at primary school or high school. They may have longer opportunity to learn more vocabulary and sentences than learning at at adult.

  4. Children who begin to learn a foreign language before they are 6 years old can achieve higher levels of second language proficiency. When they begin to learn at 13-14, they can not achieve as if they are native speakers.

  5. children have better rote-memory and better motor ability that older children. Rote-memory involves the ability to retain the association of words with the corresponding pictures, while motor ability involves the accurate pronunciation of unfamiliar sounds. In addition, older children have difficulty in imitating sounds. If they cannot imitate the sounds, they will have difficulty in making the association between sound and meaning.

In conclusion, it can be understood that teaching English for kids at early ages is very crucial, even though some people have contrast perception on it. As a teacher or a parents who concern about their students or children development, they must put a very serious attention on what and how their children are going to grow; one of the important thing is to teach a foreign language beside their native language.

Well there are really benefits when you can speak English in an early age since English is our International language but my teacher said when I was in college, when a child try to learn two different languages (the native and the second language) at the same time he will be having trouble when it comes to his vocabulary in both language compare to a child with the same age who fully focus in learning one language.

Yes of course, there also several studies investigate some negative impacts on teaching the second language at early ages, while the others supports. To avoid the negative effects the parents must anticipate it. The appropriate strategies of child learning the second language is needed in this case. At this steps, we do not hope that children master the second language. they just make it to be familiar for children, because the way kids learn and adults learn is different.
