What Changes and What Should Not

in #steemitdiversify6 years ago

Human as we are, we do the things that we do because there is something that causes it, and psychology calls it “motive”-a persons driving force to activate a certain behavior or commonly known as “Need”. In Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs, the lower the need is in the hierarchy, the more powerful it is and the higher the need is in the hierarchy, the weaker and the more distinctly the human it is (Hergenhann,2003). Among these need is the need for self esteem which is located at the top portion of the pyramid right before the need of self actualization which is at the hierarchy’s peak.A persons self esteem needs to include prestige, acceptance and status that when fed results to feelings of adequacy, competence and confidence. But when this need is not addressed, the person will feel discouraged and inferior.

These days, a person’s esteem needs are somehow being addressed, headfirst, by enhancing one’s physical appearance and social media has become a contributing factor either in feeding or starvation of this need.

What Changes?
Obviously, cosmetic surgery changes a person’s physical appearance but the change doesn’t only happen in the physical aspect: cosmetic surgery could also change a person’s life.

What should not change?
The attitude changes as the person’s physical appearance change. The person gain confidence and there’s nothing wrong with that. Not until, the person allowed himself to be consumed by his ego.

Diverse as we are, are the decision’s that we make for ourselves-decisions that satisfy our needs and make up who we are. These decisions may make changes in our lives, but respect for oneself and for others should not be one of these changes. We are all given the right to express and the responsibility to respect the rights of others. We must bear in mind that our rights end where other people’s rights begin.

In the pursuit of satisfying one’s need for recognition, acceptance and status, some people had to physically change themselves. The number of likes and followers on social media has become, to some, a measurement of their place in society. To some, these things have already become the image they see of themselves-an image they have to earn, an image they have to maintain and a standard they have to live up to.
