TIL - How to Direct Message Someone New in Steemit Chat
I figure this post is going to make me seem like a really stupid user, but I literally spent months on Steemit.chat without knowing this..
When I joined Steemit.chat, I did figure out that you could direct message a user by clicking on their username in chat:
This was limiting though, because you could only direct message users that you saw typing things in chat. What if you want to message someone that isn't talking in the chat-room?
I later found out that each chat-room had a member list. If you could find a user in the list, then you could DM them by clicking on their username!
This was still difficult though, because I would have to scroll through thousands of users until I found the person I was looking for. Plus, a lot of times the person wouldn't even be in the room I was searching in! (Usually "general".) I always figured there must be an easier way to do this, but I could never figure one out..
Until today!
Today, I learned - you just need to plug their Steemit.chat username into this link, and paste it into your browser: https://steemit.chat/direct/username
Try it out :-)
Note - you do need to know the correct spelling and capitalization of their Steemit.chat username, which can be different than the @username they are using on Steemit. Many people though (myself included) use the same username in both.
Hopefully at least one other user will benefit from my stupidity ;)

Awesome and useful article, thanks for sharing this. Even though I already knew how to do it I for sure support the understanding and knowledge passing on for steemit tools.

you know you can just press the + icon next to "direct messages" too, right.
If you start typing in the name, it autocompletes it for you
I have only been able to get that to work for people I have direct messaged before.

Never spent time on chat looking for people to message but I did learn from you just now. Wish more people just had the same name both places would make things easier.

[Edit] This weekend I'll look into how difficult it would be to add Steemit.chat username into the profile section. It would be a useful addition!
That's a great idea and an easy fix maybe can put a ticket in if ones not already in.
There isn't one yet. I'll submit a pull-request for it if I can figure it out :)

Don't feel stupid, a lot of the basic of this site can be real confusing. I learn something new about it almost everyday. I didn't know this either. Sooner or later I need to use my steemit chat account. Great post, shared.
