#24 Animation - 8 Annoying Things Clients/bosses Say to Animators

in #steemitbloggers8 years ago (edited)

Whatever it is, animators don't get much say in whether to accept the client's feedback or not. Most of the time, I don't get a say. And that is why I'm drafting this post in the middle of the night in my lonely office right now. Don't worry, I'm taking a break from looking at my characters repeatedly doing the same actions over and over again. Not to mention the same audio clip that needs to be heard countless times to animate the character's lipsync.

This post has been inspired by this recent two weeks when suddenly my boss pushed our deadline from 2 weeks to 1 week. Not only that, the project I'm working on is from a new client and boyy..... it sure is different. I've just received a lot of retakes from them and the deadline is this coming Wednesday! Let's hope I make it out alive.

8 Annoying Things Clients Say to Animators

No. 1 - Just do what you can first

Yeaps, clients would just throw everything at you and ask you to figure the scenes and animation out yourself. But when you're finally done with a scene, they suddenly have all the things in the world to say. Sometimes, even the most crucial information is told only when you're done with the scene, and most likely resulting in you needing to re-animate the whole scene because they wanted your character to grab climb the ladder instead of using the stairs.

No. 2 - I will be reward you BONUS for OT

I have reached that time in my life where I would rather have a nice work-life balance than to stay up until 2-3AM every day and get rewarded a week's salary. So not worth it. Even more now that I have Steemit and I can make more earnings a day than my day job. :)

No. 3 - I like the first one better

It happens more often than you think. I think I'm usually the unlucky one because the clients would always do that to me on complicated and complex scenes. After animating a full cycle of animation on various characters playing. They suddenly asked if the characters can run in circles. Upon finishing, they've decided that the kids can just play by themselves separatedly.

No. 4 - Can you let the owl grab the branch with two legs instead of one?

It is these things that are a waste of time. It is not something where you can just simply ask the owl to grab the branch with two legs. It would need the animator to re-animate and re-constrain the branch and it will take a lot more time especially when the owl and the branch interacts with another object on scene.

No. 5 - We will provide you with the assets later.

They would usually ask us to start the project because, time is money. The faster we finish in a shorter period of time, they have to pay us lesser. The quotations for a job are usually quoted in man-hours here in Malaysia for projects. Having said that, sometimes the clients do not have the assets for the characters yet but they still insist on continuing the animation phase by using a dummy asset. And... you know how it goes...

No. 6 - Can you finish this real quick?

This wouldn't be much of a problem if it was during working hours but somehow... this ALWAYS happens when it's almost time to go home. It usually is after working hours. And then you'll start getting retakes for that supposedly a 'quick fix'.

No. 7 - Can you give it a nicer pose?

Sometimes I do get pretty 'general' feedbacks and that's when you know that you might be in for the long haul. When the clients become indecisive and wants to see what you can come up with is usually just saying, "Can you do 5 versions of animations for me then I'll decide?"

No. 8 - I believe you can do so much more!

Poof! And I get a ton of shots more than everyone else. Sometimes, working a bit slower has it's perks too. Not to encourage and laziness or excessive procrastination but I realized when I work too fast, I tend to get more workload than the others. So sometimes, I would slow down a little to have a more average working speed.

I'm about to pack my things now and gonna head home. It's already 1AM as I'm pen-ning this post down in my office. The work definitely can't be done in time for Wednesday but I'll just do my best. Ciaoozz

Oh, I'm sorry to read that, it sounds tough. I know what you mean with getting more workload when working fast. I never knew any pro animator like you, @zord189, and I was very curious about one thing in animation industry, namely, if it's common for animators to e.g. start their own animation series and develop it, to go with their own artistic path, follow their big projects or is it more common to work in studios, in teams etc. The reason I'm asking is I saw many simply wonderful animations by young artists in recent years and I would love to see them create more and more of their unique animations, get recognition and I was wondering if it's relatively easy to achieve such thing nowadays, e.g. with social media. I'm very curious about your own personal experience @zord189, do you get a lot of opportunity to pursue your own animated projects instead of doing commisions. Sorry for the chaotic question/comment, I'm just quite passionate about animation and my thoughts mixed on this topic ;P
All the best,
Klaudia

Most of the animator friends I know do want to create something of their own. But we do also know that that is almost impossible if we do not have a team. Unless we have all the time in our hands and resources. I would say it is always a challengeing task to create your own animation but some animators have managed to create really awesome ones during their spare time.

For me, I would want to create something of my own and get recognized IF i have the time which I am now juggling between Steemit and work. I'm currently working in a team and I don't get much opportunities to pursue my own projects because of the time and resources that I don't really have.

Haha I hope I've answered all your questions? :D

Shame this really sounds so incredibly frustrating. People can really be vague and indecisive at times.

It can get pretty annoying at times.

As Jude always says... (hehe)... "stop being so ANNORING!!!!" LOL

Well, I feel like snoring now... :D

"Can you finish this real quick?"
Oh god not just animation but any kind of work in general

But man all of these sound so annoying I salute you for being able to not being insane at this point

Haha, Yeaaa I dread that question

Im no animator, but i have clients or boss who does not have the same skills as i do, and i have no say because they are the one with the money right?
Its okay @zord189, just create a short animation movie and put it in Dtube or youtube! i will be happy to collaborate and write a script. (i mean it) *wink

Hahaha, we'll see how it goes :P It'll need TIME though

Sounds so stressful though you tried your best to humour it up. Grace and peace for you bro :) am sure you are doing a great job since you always give your 100% whether anyone acknowledge you or not. May your efforts be rewarded!

Thanks @happycrazycon. Haha, it's soo late when I drafted this post... Basically robotic writing

haha, this is so true! I am not an animated, but more a person on the other end :)

Enjoyed the article, thanks for sharing.

Hahaha, oh no! Ur the client! :P
