White Belt BJJ Curiculum - Arm Bar Escapes
Greetings Jiu Jitieros, fancy a roll? This is the ongoing serial where I share the standard white belt curriculum that makes our school and lineage so strong......a good base of knowledge from which to grow and progress.
I am just returning from the academy where we trained more full mount submissions and escapes, then mobbed the local breakfast place for some post workout carbs! "I want ALL the bacon and eggs.....not just lots."
In this class, we go into some detail on a tool everyone should have in our tool box.....Arm Bar escapes. Arm Bars are such a staple of grappling and Jiu Jitsu that covering the counters is essential education.
Personal perspective and take-aways
- As soon as I feel that arm getting looped, I immediately try and get that RNC grip and work to free my shoulder.
- Those "small explosive motions* seem to be a universally good escape technique. Good way to power out without having to spend too much strength.
- I generally look to threaten/remove one leg or the other, often back and forth, to keep them countering/defending rather than finishing.
- Celebrate being awesome, go into a triangle!
What's your go-to move for escaping the Arm Bar?
