Blog 35: Oldest Fort in the Philippines: “Fort San Pedro – Cebu”

I’ve been in Plaza Independencia for how many times and even near to Pier 3 where I use to ride fast craft going home to Samar, as I am waiting for my postal ID in the Post office inside the Plaza Independencia, I noticed that there are lots of foreigners visiting in Fort San Pedro (where I actually don’t know about the history) and my curiosity strikes, and so I visited the place.
Cebu City known as the Queen City of the South is gaze at, as the oldest city in the Philippines. There, I learned everything about the Old Fort: The fort has a long and rich history, it is lying in Plaza Independencia in Cebu City, Fort San Pedro (aka Fuerza de San Pedro) was constructed by Spanish and Cebuano laborers. Miguel Lopez de Legazpi, a Spanish conquistador who founded the earliest Spanish settlement in Cebu, instigated the construction of the fortress.
As I made some research, Fort San Pedro is triangular in shape. It has two sides facing the sea and the third side is facing the land. The sides facing the sea were safeguarded with cannon and the front with a strong fence made of wood. Its three bastions are named La Concepcion (southwest), Ignacio de Loyola (southeast), and San Miguel (northeast). Fourteen cannons were settled in their locations and most of them are still there today.
In this day and age, part of the fort is a museum where the Spanish pamphlets, manufactured article, sculptures, paintings, swords and other weaponry are being displayed. The inside of the walls has been turned into a garden bedizened with some green and flowering stifling plants.
Finally, I saw everything inside the old Fort and I was really amazed how this old Fort maintained on its historical look and manages to take care of the important documents that reminisce us from the past.

It's interesting that it still stands up to this day as a silent witness to history. Do they maintain that or restore it? Have there been no damage at all through the years?
Yes, though there are improvised constriction but still it maintains the history look of the fort.
