between Soekarno and Uniform

Soekarno, from the start of the movement's activities to the presidency, is very concerned about appearance, especially about dress. It can not be denied, that among the movement at that time, Sukarno is one that has a characteristic in dress, and later followed by other movements.
Upon entering the technical school in Bandung, Sukarno began using white shirts, pantaloons, and ties. The present generation of movements such as Soekarno, Gatot Mangkoepradja, Sartono, Ali Sastroamidjoyo, Syahrir, and Amir Syarifuddin, were early generations who had been wearing suits, trousers, shoes and ties. Rudolf Mrázek, a professor of history at the University of Michigan, calls this style of dressing "Indonesian dandy" (kenecisan).
In 1928, at a PNI congress, Sukarno advised his party to wear "uniform" clothing. Inevitably, the proposal soon became a polemic among congress participants, among them Ali Sastroamidjojo, who later became ambassador and Prime Minister in the 1950s.
Ali Sastroamidjoyo argues, we should not be dressed as European uniforms as opposed to national personality, but using uniforms without shoes and sandals, so it looks revolutionary in the eyes of the people. No doubt, the atmosphere of congress became noisy because of Soekarno's debate with Ali Sastroamidjojo.
To Ali Sastroamidjojo, Sukarno said sharply, "I do not agree ... many people are chicken legs, but they are not revolutionaries. Many high-ranking people wear sarongs, but they work wholeheartedly for the colonialists. What signifies a person is revolutionary is the devotion he has fulfilled in the struggle. "
What could be said, Sukarno's proposal lost at that time. Even so, Sukarno and most of the movement figures still wear trousers, coats, white shirts, shoes, and ties. Because of the use of the tie, Soekarno also had a row with a penghulu (kadi), which is when married Oetari, daughter of HOS Tjokroaminoto. The prince refused to marry Sukarno because he regarded the tie as a Christian dress. Soekarno remains insistent. "In this case let even the Prophet himself, would not be able to tell me to remove the tie," Soekarno said.
Previously, Sukarno also advised his party to wear the cap as the identity of the national movement. I can not conclude, who inspired Sukarno about the use of this cap. Some say, Soekarno follows the use of the cap from the leader of SI (SI), HOS Tjokroaminoto, the man who is considered the teacher and the idol figure. However, there is also a revealing, the use of skull by Sukarno was inspired by the tradition of the Turkish nationalist movement, Kemal Attaturk.
In the atmosphere of the movement at that time, skull has an additional function other than as a head covering, which is a tool to collect donations in the middle of a large meeting. So thick was the cap or cap as the symbol of the national movement, so that the Dutch ruler had ordered to arrest all who wore cap or cap.
After the proclamation of independence in 1945, where he was appointed President, Bung Karno began to wear uniform (uniform) clothing. Bung Karno said; "... I want to wear a uniform on every appearance in public because I know the oppressed people are happy to see his dappered President. An Indonesian leader must be a dignified figure. He must show power. For a race that was once conquered, this is power. "
At that time, Bung Karno composed his own uniform form as president, a blend of military uniform and civilian fighter (the people). The coat is displayed with a four-piece outboard pouch, while the presidency (five-pointed star in a circle) is shaded on both flaps. Do not miss anyway, black skull is a little tilted to the left.
Around the 1950s, especially after being appointed commander-in-chief of the armed forces, Bung Karno's uniforms were increasingly leaning to the military style by making a service mark on the chest. In addition, she also still has stocks of other dressed styles such as white suit suits and short sleeve and long sleeve safaris.
By dressing like that, does not mean that Sukarno wanted to show the character of masculinity or masculinity. No! Soekarno dressed like that to show confidence to the people. Bung Karno said, "If I'm in military clothing then I'm mentally dressed in the veil of trust. This trust moved to the people. And they need this. "This, in the mind of Bung Karno, is an important means of elevating people's trust and removing it from the inferior feelings of colonial legacy.
Thus, the uniform in the eyes of Bung Karno shows not only national identity, but rather as a tool to awaken the trust and dignity of the people. Before building a nation, we need to build our souls and minds first.
As a psychologist of the masses, Bung Karno understood very well that in a country where 50% of the population is illiterate, besides creating the influence of words and speeches, it is also necessary to create a "look" like a great leader before the people.
If, then, in the current situation, where corrupt officials and oppressors of the masses wearing suits and skulls, are they still worth using these symbols? At certain moments, where our society is so easily influenced by images or outward appearances, we do have to wear such clothes. For me, it's not about having to wear a suit and a cap or not, but the point is to be neat and elegant in front of the people.
