RE: We need “Decentralization”, to save the social network

in #steemit6 years ago

I've had a similar train of thought.

Centralized companies not only get access to large amounts of customer data which they sell to ad companies, they can choose to censor anything they deem inappropriate from their platform.

Whether it's YouTube spending resources demonetizing people for having the wrong perspective on politics and current events, to Twitter making an exclusive club out of the Verified feature, to Facebook going after whatever their definition of "Fake News" is, I think it's incredibly important for us to start moving away from these companies to decentralized equivalents.

It can give us some peace of mind that our content won't be taken down for being inappropriate, that our channel won't be censored due to how we think or who we affiliate with. We'd also get more control over our own data.
