A case study between steemit and facebook

in #steemit8 years ago

I have been on facebook years, in fact, since it started (or shortly after). I love social media, 70% of my business comes from social media due to constant promoting of my real estate agency.

However facebook is getting more and more difficult to use. Aside from the whinging and calling for opinions on flags, breast feeding mothers, getting the governments permission to drink milk (as if you need it) and a bunch of other reactions and false fears, interesting, relevant or business related posts are becoming more and more difficult to promote.

First of all only a small amount of your “friends” will see the post. Secondly, even when paid advertising is used, if the ad is not rejected by facebook (it can get rejected for the slightest thing), it’s costly and only semi effective and it depends on who has clicked on it. When you pay for clicks you are paying for people to click on ads whether they are taking action or not.

The truth is that facebook is a centralised business owned by individuals and while it can be fun and promotional, the value is created in the paid advertising, the value belongs to the owners of facebook and your posts and time are used to create entertainment value and fill in the content between ads and to create an audience for the ads (that you get nothing from but you can pay for if you want).

You do not own any stake or share in the value that you are helping to create on facebook or any other centralised social media sites.

About a month ago, I came across STEEMIT, it’s a new social media platform. It’s decentralised (runs off a block chain) and meritocratic and the value you create is paid back to you in cryptocurrency – steem dolloars.

There are a lot of steemit experts around the globe who have created a multitude of great posts and videos on how it all works so I’m not going to get into any of that, I just want to share an example of something I posted at the same time on facebook and steemit so that you can see an immediate difference in one post.

I’m the owner of a real estate agency so naturally I take pictures of our SOLD signs in front of properties. On this day I took a photo of some of our clients, a group of happy developers who just purchased an amazing duplex where they can build new properties. They were wrapped, it was a happy moment and sold stickers went up because it just settled.

I was new to steemit at that time, my account was only 2 weeks old and I had 35 people following me. Within minutes of posting one person liked my post resulting in a payment of $0.23 to me for creating a value in this platform.
OK so 23 cents is nothing to get excited about but it’s more than facebook, linkedin and twitter ever paid me in all the years of contribution I have been on their sites and amassing thousands of followers and millions of "likes"

OK so here is the same post put onto facebook the same day:

I put the post of our happy clients on two of my facebook pages on the same day. On my personal page it resulted in 15 likes – out of 5000 friends. - picture above.

I also have another facebook page that is set up under my name but a business profile page. There are over 25,000 likes on that page and this exact post had reached 123 people – out of 25,000 plus, the total amount of posts on that page had reached 377 people in that week, out of 25,000 plus and there are pop up messages on the sides and top of my page telling me to “boost” the post for $28 and reach more people.

OK so there are 25,000 people on my page and I need to boost the post so they can see what I'm posting. I had 35 people on my steemit account and made $0.23 on a single post. That is JUST 35 FOLLOWERS in total (NOT 35,000!).
..... and I have no idea who the 35 followers are.

What would 25,000 followers look like on steemit??

Go onto steemit and look at the trending posts, people are making thousands per day.

At the time of writing this there was a post that made $771.29 made in 2 days and this person has 18,000 followers, this is only one example, the bigger players are making thousands per day.

Are you seeing the difference?

There is something magical in decentralisation, not only monetary decentralisation like bitcoin but also decentralised social media platforms like steemit.
OH and guess what? I’m putting this post on steemit first because facebook has the liberty of taking it down if they don’t like it, why – because it’s centralised, they own it, they make the rules, it’s theirs. Play by their rules on that platform but create your own on steemit.

You've caught the bug :)
We're only just getting started. Glad you could join us. I had a friend run a search for accounts with 'Adelaide' tagged as the location and you were one of 99 results :)

It's bloody awesome Matt. I love the crypto space and love social media so the two combined are just unreal. Thanks for your support here :)

I love the use of data to back the story.

Welcome to Steemit! Btw, I never liked Facebook and I spent several years being ridiculed (in a friendly way) for refusing to be part of Facebook. I remember back when some employers wouldn't hire employees who didn't have an account because they were deemed (1) antisocial (2) or to be hiding something.

I'm glad that those days have come to end and that facebook will soon be joining Myspace. Bye, bye facebook!

I agree and I'm enjoying this a lot more. I'm active on FB because I have a business and a need to be visible but as far as interesting content goes, this platform is so much better.
Also getting this to the same following that I have done with other social media means that I can create some real value here for myself and more importantly helping others.
