On Steemit (or in real life) - Is it good or Bad?

Steemit has many social butterflies. Have you noticed?

I was sitting quietly in a remote location, isolated - lost in my own thoughts. Since my laptop was under a great 'Windows 10' upgrade episode (making me wonder why it's not called Win-Doze) for 3 days - I was pretty much cut off from Steemit and in general, the virtual world.

It is good to be cut off once in a while in this way - gives me a chance to notice the real world around me.

There were many creations of god around me - from four legged mammals to the creepy -crawlies hiding under rocks. The only one absent, other than me, was the two legged wonder called 'man'. As I took in the plethora of life forms around me, I noticed this butterfly of the species 'Tawny Coster'. flitting from flower to flower... Here is the photo I captured with my Nikon P900:

The butterfly danced from flower to flower- with touch here and a kiss there. I am sure it gave the butterfly equivalent of a bright toothy smile to all the flowers. It even touched upon leaves and did not leave them unloved.

Hmmm... What did that remind me of? I seem to have come across such personalities in real life, as well as, on Steemit! Do you remember having interacted with such personalities?

We are all aware in general, of what a social butterfly is. It is interesting though that the definition by vocabulary.com paints almost a visual picture for us:

A social butterfly is someone who is social or friendly with everyone, flitting from person to person, the way a butterfly might.

The social butterfly interacts with everyone with zeal, spends a little time with everyone - shows interest in everything that everyone around is up to. This must be good isn't it?

A social butterfly is not all together bad - as perceived usually. The social butterfly actually has some value in some scenarios in life. The social butterfly can be the life of a party.

Imagine yourself to be an awkward, nerdy personality (like many of us geniuses here). I can bet that a lot of us have experienced the scenario when we feel like we are part of the decorations in the hustling-bustling party. No one pays any attention to us. About to be disheartened and considering going back to our pads to play Zelda or Pokeymon again, we are suddenly touched magically by the social butterfly. "Hey - how is it going" is all it takes for us to glow radiantly and gush out our troubles in life .. from being underweight to being stuck on level 37 in some game! The social butterfly has never ever heard of the game but has a few words for us anyways - "sometimes it helps to just look for other ways if way forward is blocked" says the social butterfly. We have tears of happiness in our eyes ... bless this wonderful caring person !

Same experience on Steemit. We are minnows with a million other minnows around us. No one cares what we do or write on Steemit. We write a gut wrenching tale of how wonderful life is and how we ended up helping two blind ladies across the road! No one cares for many excrutiating minutes and then PINGGGGG .. In comes a social butterfly going "Hey there mate - wonderful story. You are doing an awesome job in helping millions of old ladies across miles of desert roads!" There won't even be an upvote but hey - we feel like we are on cloud 9. We go back to typing more drivel happily with a spring in our fingers ...

That is not all bad is it?

The social butterfly touches everyone's lives fleetingly and perhaps does give some momentary joy. That joy does counts for something but the main question is - does the social butterfly form any relationships? Is there any 'connect' with anyone?

Imagine the awkward you - having thought that the social butterfly is a wonderful and caring person - trying to reconnect after a few days, to show the social butterfly the phenomenal progress that you have made in Zelda (the king of retro arcade games) ... You will be disappointed my friend, because the social butterfly is way beyond you now and is probably talking to some athlete about improving muscle memory or some such arcane thing.

Same thing happens on Steemit - the social butterfly, having flitted through your posts and shown all kinds of interest in you, collects you as the trophy follower, gets upvotes and is gone to the next lucrative newbie with a good SP.

Momentary interactions with social butterflies on Steemit give us hope and the will to hang on - but ultimately, the lack of a connect leaves us heartbroken.

A real Steemian, interested in a connect will be consistent in an interaction and not a social butterfly. Low Steem prices, Steemit posting issues, lack of quid-pro-quo in upvoting does not deter a true Steemian who is interested in a good connect.

In Conclusion:

Real relationships carry us by,
Not just being a Social Butterfly!

Steemians, please share your experiences, knowledge and views about Social Butterflies. I believe it will help to make Steemit a better platform. It will be great to get more perspective and a lively dialogue going. Thanks

Hey there, I haven't come across one of your posts for ages. I loved the butterfly photo. I'm not a social butterfly at all I'm afraid. I suppose there is a place for everyone if their actions are coming from good!

Hey there friend. I am sorry - the fault is all mine. Due to work pressure and my dad's health issues, I logged in on Steemit only very late at night. I have also been a bit lagging in reading my friends' posts. I hope to be more regular now. Thank you so much for your comment and for remembering me dear. Appreciate your support. I hope your dad is a little better?

A great post and a great topic! To avoid the false feelings and euphoria, I prefer the isolated and remote spots in my daily life! Better to write for yourself than for a crowd and sooner or later like minded souls will respond! This is only my own opinion! Blessings!

Thanks. I appreciate what you are saying. In the world today, it is kind of difficult to avoid contacts and relations. Not saying that we need to be a social butterfly but some rudimentary interaction is always a plus.

Being cut off from the outside world gives great quality time to reflect and think through things clearly @vm2904

I tend to agree, rather a couple of good connections than millions of passers by. Heck go to any city in the world and sit for a minute you will see plenty of passers by, but try make a connection with one and see if it happens.

Thanks @joanstewart for your thoughtful obsevations. Upvoted your comment
