Steemit Statistics & Big Data: 🚀 End of November 2018 Update 🚀

in #steemit6 years ago (edited)

Thanks to ALL of you, Steemit is staying alive!

We reached 13.26 mn visits in November!

There is an important difference between total visitors to a site and unique ones. In this case the 13.26mn include the multiple times a person visited the website.

Therefore, as a good Steemian you probably connect everyday which will make you count for a total of 30 visits.
Therefore, how many "unique users" does Steemit has?

This is a very important question that I will try to answer later on. According to the Beta Analysis from the website I use to compile these datas, it is around 7,4mn !

I] Traffic

Daily Steemit Traffic

In January, we experienced the best daily numbers at 1.5mn+; they decreased a little under 1.5mn in February.
Unfortunately the daily traffic on Steemit slowed down to c.500 000 in November 2018. Let’s hope it is just a little setback
Another, explanation could be that people spend more time on apps (Steepshot, Dtube, eSteem…) which are not accounted in this analysis.

Steemit website is ranked 4,019 worldwide
Steemit is ranked 3,274 in the US
Steemit kept on deteriorating its ranking as it ranked 15,000+ last year.

Google Trends

Google Trend is an Indice based on 100, which means that 100 represents the week when most people searched for "Steemit" on Google.

Steemit Traffic share by country

In the Top 5, the strongest traffic decline came from Venezuela with -16.92% visits!

Mobile Traffic is stable compared to last month as it represents 44.37% of the total

This is useful to know how people use the Steem platform. Initiatives like Partiko (mobile app), eSteem (mobile app), Busy.org, SteepShot (Instagram), Zappl (Twitter like), utopian-io… will probably help the community to grow on mobile phones.

Be Careful with the Number of Visits

Also, remember that if you connect from a different device (home/work computer, mobile phone, tablet) you will count as a "new visitor" on each of these devices.

So as an example, let's say you connected at home, at work and in the subway. You would represent 3 visits out of these 1mn+ Daily Visits.

II] Marketing Mix

Organic Search is once again improving and represents 54,1% of the incoming Traffic.
Organic search is when people research on Google. As the number of quality bloggers on Steemit increase, our content has a higher probability of being listed in Google's Top results.

Different Channels:

Direct: When you type in you Web browser www.steemit.com
Mail: When you connect to steemit.com through an e-mail link
Referrals: When you connect to steemit.com through a link found on another website (github...)
Social: When you connect to Steemit through a Facebook, Twitter, Instagram... page or link
Organic Search: When you type a search term like "Crypto" on Google and you click on one of the following steemit link proposed to you

Traffic Share Evolution since inception of this analysis

The Organic Search Strategy which means the Content Strategy is working as people come across Steemit looking for Crypto, Blog, Travel, etc… related articles.

Referring Social Pages

Twitter represents 16,2% of all the social platform incoming traffic. Reddit is also a strong source of new visits on the Steemit Platform. Last week, Facebook was the first Social Media to bring traffic to Steemit.com

5 most searched terms on Google that leads to Steemit.com

What are Steemians main interests?

Gender Demographics

Age Distribution

III] Steemit website metrics

You feel a bit confused about these 3 metrics? Let me explain.

  • Bounce Rate is the % of people that leave the Website after just navigating on a single Webpage. The lower, the Better
  • Daily Pageviews per Visitor is the average number of pages a visitor opens. The Higher, the Better
  • Daily Time on Site is the full time a visitor spend on the website before closing the internet Webpage. The Higher the Better

My november assumptions

  • Total visits to Steemit.com: 13,26mn
  • Assumption of Total unique visitors in November: 6.7-7.5mn
  • Total Daily visitors: 400-500k
  • Assumption of Total Daily Unique visitors: 285-335k

This is a collective achievement and I would like to congratulate all of us! We need to do better and get back to the January 2018's type of numbers.

What do you think of this Steemit Big Data Update? Please let me know in the comment section.

Hi @vlemon, great to see you contributing via Utopian, welcome! You've tagged your contribution as a #blog post, however we believe the #analysis category is a better fit here. You've picked a very interesting question on finding out how many unique users Steemit.com has! I'm actually surprised to see the numbers that high. Around 7m unique visitors for the month an around 300k per day is pretty good, given that we have only around 10k active authors!
Utopian analysis contributions typically contain data gathering, transformation, filtering and visualization steps described in a reproducible way, and the Utopian review procedures assume this to some extend. Your approach therefore doesn't fit this very well. Having the data collected and visualized via external tools and services makes it a bit harder to judge which steps/graphs were done by you and which were compiled from other sources. You've shown a lot of graphs - which conclusions would you draw from them? Do you have more information on how this data is collected? I can image how the search-related data is gathered, but especially seeing numbers of direct page visits, gender and age distribution results requires users sharing their full web presence with these services? I'd expect (hope) that this the case only for a fraction of the "human" users? Do you know more about that?

Your contribution has been evaluated according to Utopian policies and guidelines, as well as a predefined set of questions pertaining to the category.

Hello there @crokkon,
Thank you for writing this very interesting comment.
I use different free sources such as Google Trends or Alexa (Amazon).
But I also use a paying source called Similarweb, they give me access to most of these datas that I compile in excel after. I have to save them as I have only access to it on a 12 months rolling basis.

They get their datas from different sources: browser add-on that consumers use allow them to « track » users (gender, time...), they also refine this through companies willing to have access to the full datas and communicating their owns to the platform. They make a « statistic panel » with the data they have to crops check these numbers.

The conclusion is that Steemit.com is still losing members (active) but that there are a very strong power in all articles published that have been very well referenced on Google. It increasingly become most of the traffic.

Finally, I also do Steem ecosystem analysis and we can see that 3rd party dapps such as dtube, busy, SteemMonsters are doing much better and holding their users over the long term.

I could go more deeply into the process but I am on vacations right now.

Should I have applied for utopian through the website ? I have been doing these analysis for more than a year. One monthly big Steemit Big Data analysis.

Take care and Merry Christmas

Thanks for the additional information on the data gathering/collection services! There's no need
(and no way) to apply for Utopian through the website. Just add the corresponding tags to your post and it will be evaluated by Utopian moderators. As I said above, the Utopian analysis category is mainly targeted towards analyses which include own data gathering and processing/visualization steps and not so much on the compilation of data gathered by others. But as long as there is significant analysis of the results in addition to the presentation of graphs/results from external sources, this can be supported by Utopian as well.

Thank you for your review, @crokkon! Keep up the good work!

Thank you for the amazing analysis! Curious where the age and gender data is coming from? Thanks!

Thank you for your comment.
It is coming from Similarweb a data provider that follows you while you browse the internet 😉

Lol thanks! Guess there's still something good about tracking user data after all lol.

The drop in the steemit is very interesting since we have a lot of different dapps that is better than steemit.com site.
Thanks for sharing.
Cheers!

Indeed ! I will do them right after to show which one are gaining momentum :).
