Money vs Education
During my training on Human Rights last week there was a session on problems or issues that each of the participant wanted to share with the audience.
One topic that really open my eyes was from a participant from Central Kalimantan, Indonesia. My new friend, Petricia told us that there is a problem of lack of awareness of the importance of education in the community where she lives.
In the community where she lives, there is this big resort build that provides job opportunities to some of the member of the communities. It provides them the opportunity to get income to support their children's education. Unfortunately, some of the parents encourage their children to work at this resort at young age. This makes the children more interested in finding money than going to school. The children said that if they go to school, they won't get any money like they go to work at the resort.
Some of the parents in the community are more than happy that their children don't pursue their studies. Their mind-set is that, as long as their children bring money home, their life will be secured. They’re lack of awareness that education is important to their children.
Education vs money
Is money really that important than education? Let's us see some points about these two subjects.
Education is better than money because without a good foundation of education, there would be no way to make good money. In order to land a good paying job that pays bills and support your family, you need a good education. We all know that without education, there is practically no chance to secure a good job.
On the other hand, if you have money, you can get almost everything in life including education, food, house, clothes and other daily living things needed.
Education plays a great role in our life and considered as human 'third eye'. You cannot buy anything with money, especially education. No education means you're just like a fish without water.
On the other hand, there is no education especially quality one, without money. That's why you need money in every step of your life.
Education is the first step to money because with education, you can earn good money as you've got a good job. Without education, you'll probably end up doing other people dirty laundry or washing dishes with low pay at a restaurant. If you want a good job in the future, you will need education. To realize your future, education is first.
On the other hand, There’re many ways to earn money without education, but the only way to get an education is by using money.
Academic achievement and knowledge gained make a better person. Education gives you manners and teaches you to respect your elders and much more. Some say that money is the root to all evil.
On the other hand, there are some places in life where you can get only with money, not with education. You can't live an easy, happy life only with education. Without money you can't be educated but you can earn money without education.
Suggestion to Petricia’s Community Situation
Back to Petricia’s community problem, here are some suggestions that she has presented that day.
- Give awareness to the parents the importance of education.
- Provides education materials such as book to the children.
- Government to consider giving opportunity to children that are good in skills, not just good in academic.
As a conclusion, at the end of the day, you can have a degree and still not have a job. So in that sense, money is better than education because it allows you to pay your bills, just having an education does not. But a well-educated person is more likely to earn more money, and thus have better living conditions than a non-educated person. And the argument continues…
Give a man a fish, feed him for an evening. Teach a man to fish, feed him for a lifetime.
