Honour Killing by Ambarasu

My Sunday was spent visiting my parents and then relaxing at The Nest aka @beverlyjoe mum's house. It's such a hot sunny day, how I miss dipping in the swiming pool..like I and @kilatecla did after end of our training sessions.

Talking about the Human Right training reminds me of one of the participant, Mr Ambarasu's presentation about the cruelty of caste in one part of India. His story really touch this softy heart of mine and makes me wanted to share it here.

Honour Killing

An honor killing or honour killing is the murder of a member of a family or social group by other members.

Reason of Increase

According to Ambarasus's presentation, Honour killing is on the increase because the leading political parties do not condemn them and due to fear of losing vote bank of the community against which they may condemn. Furthermore, the media also potray the honor killer as valiant heroes instead of exposing the crime.

Case

Following are cases that Ambarasu presented to us.

1. A story of a 13-year-old girl is believed to be a victim of "honour killing" after her father allegedly beat her head against a wall and set her on fire because he saw her talking to a boy of lower caste.

2. A young couple in love is brutally murdered in what police say is a case of "honour crime".

3. A man of lower caste was hacked to death by a gang on bikes after he married a member of the upper caste.

Triggers of honor killings

• Refusal of an arranged marriage - Refusal of an arranged marriage is often a cause of an honor killing.

• Family member Allegations and Rumors - An allegation against a woman can be enough to tarnish her family's reputation . The family's fear of being ostracized by the community is enormous.

• Rape victims face severe violence, including honor killings, from their families and relatives.

• Seeking a divorce - A woman attempting to obtain a divorce or separation without the consent of the husband or extended family can also be a trigger for honor killings.

Suggestions

1. Promote inter caste marriage

2. The Government to give Rs 50,000/- to the couple of inter-caste marriage. Preference and priority is given to inter-caste couple in jobs. It gives protection to the couple.

3. Government to enforce law very strictly. The criminal should be punished severely. Stringent law and measure have to be enforced.

4. Educational institution should promote inter caste marriage.

At the end of Ambarasu's presentation, as an Non Goverment Organisation, he would like to seek any valuable solutions to end the honor killing.
