I made a comment the other day about how Steemit should hide the name of the author until after you upvote the article. The assumption would be that it would curtail people only voting based on who wrote it and not the merit of the content. Maybe we could expand that to include the earnings and total votes. And while they're at it, they could do away with the ability to rescind a vote. Keep people from changing their mind once they find out the details of what they just voted on.

But some people find value solely in upvoting who wrote it. Other people find value in the content. Still others find value in their voting company. You can't predict it, and trying to control how others determine what they value seems futile.

Steemit is like the debate that goes on every year about the all-star voting in professional sports. Most times, the assembled teams are made up of the most popular players and not the one's who are having great seasons and earning accolades. The leagues argue it's all about what the fans want, the players mostly want the ones that have earned it by their performance. I don't necessarily believe what I commented is the best way to go, but something to think about when voting, which is about to become pretty important.
