The Tsar Liberator is grateful to Bulgaria

in #steemit6 years ago

Such an inscription was made on the monument to Alexander II, which stands in the very center of the Bulgarian capital, on the Square of the National Assembly, opposite the parliament. People's elects, probably, greet him every day.

The monument was erected here on the initiative of the Bulgarians in 1907.

The implementation of this initiative, which included a huge competition, has been going on since 1892! There were 90 people willing to take part / perpetuate Alexander II in bronze, or rather to get a grand one. These are sculptors from different countries. The competition was won by the Florentine master Arnoldo Dzoki. The project cost resulted in 300,000 francs.

The total height of the monument is 12 meters, and the figure of the king is 4.5 meters. The bas-relief figures depict the people, the goddess Nike, and the generals who participated in the war of liberation. This Skobelev, Gurko, Ignatiev.

The bas-relief depicts three important events - the Battle of the Eurasians, the Treaty of San Stefano and the Convening Assembly.

Under the inscription "Tsar Liberator is recognized Bulgaria" there is a bronze laurel wreath from the Romanian king, on which the same inscription is made as on the monument.

Inside the monument, a capsule is mounted, which contains all the coins that have been used in Bulgaria since the Liberation before 1907, as well as all documents of the committee dealing with this project.

By the way, Alexander II was called the “Liberator” not for Bulgaria, but for the decree on the abolition of serfdom in Russia.

All photos were taken by me on one sunny October day on my iPhone. Therefore, one illuminated, but the inscription on it is perfectly visible.

Thank you for your time and attention.

Excellent article, just I dont understand the Title?!? Who is grateful to whom, it is Bulgaria the one grateful to Tzar Liberator, and not vice versa as stated in the title. Thank you.
