Advice for Those New to Steemit and How to Maximize Your Time Here

in #steemit7 years ago

Joining Steemit can be a life changing affair for anyone. This is true no matter where you live. I am a member of a few Steemit groups on Facebook and see the same concerns arise regularly in them. Members wanting to know how to improve their Steemit account status. I am not perfect, nor the absolute best at it, but I have a few tips for anyone to improve their Steemit situation.

Don’t spam content by others

This is one that we see a lot here on Steemit. People leaving a short comment that, often, has nothing to do with the article. This is annoying, and it is a fantastic way to get your account flagged, costing you reputation and eventually lowering your account status here on Steemit.
Be sincere and comment on stuff that you really have something to say about.

Resteem and upvote content that you like

This is a no brainer but, so few do it. Don’t underestimate the power of resteeming content that you like. Upvote it, resteem it. That is a fantastic way to make new friends. People pay attention to others sharing their content. It is a much better way to say thank you to the author than simply posting a nonsense comment.

Don’t waste your time, post authentic content

Another no brainer but so few get it. Especially new accounts. Everyone sees the few people that make a couple hundred bucks posting a picture or a meme or a video and want to follow suit. Sure, that might work. More than likely though you are going to end up having posted content that is overshadowed by the hundreds, if not thousands, of others that are doing the same thing because it is easy.

Be different and unique

Following up on the previous tip, do stuff others are not doing. If you live in a unique area of the world, post pictures of that. Talk about your life, your situation, your location. People like me love to follow adventures of others from other countries and see what is going on there from first hand accounts.
If you have access to beautiful land features then make sure to post pics of them, videos, etc. That is what people on Steemit like to see. Selfies are cool but if you can do a selfie in front of a beautiful sunset or waterfall then it is not “just a selfie”.

Don’t spam

I know I mentioned this already but seriously, don’t spam others content. This means don’t bother posting one-word comments or “I upvoted you, please upvote me” or similar comments. That is just a quick way to getting flagged and no one likes that stuff.
If you are posting a comment, post a meaningful comment. Let the author know you liked their content and why.
I hope this helps new Steemians to better themselves and their accounts here. We need our friends here to be strong and focused. We are a team.

You might also add, go look for communities on discord or steemit.chat. Finding real people that post quality content is a good way to get advice and find quality people to follow (or so advises the commenter that's been so busy lately they haven't been in either steemit.chat or on discord...)

Resteem and upvote content that you like

But don't resteem everything you like. I've unfollowed people because of the mess of unrelated resteems so deep I couldn't find their posts in my feed. I've heard confessions from others that have done the same. Maybe we're a minority, but you might want to make sure you get your own content up in addition to the resteems.

Don’t spam

In addition to this, do comment on other's people's stuff after posting, quite often I go check out the commenters blog after I see their votes or meaningful comments looking to for stuff to vote on.

Some great points there. Definitely things that need to be brought up. I have seen people resteem so much stuff that I have also unfollowed them because I couldn't remember why I started following them in the first place. I try to keep my resteems to specific topics that I also produce content in.

Upvoting good comments is a feature that so many are missing out on. I have seen great comments that made more sense than the content they were commenting on and seen those comments receive little to no upvotes. I feel if we want better interaction with our friends here, we need to make use of the incentive available to do so.

It's great to see posts like yours that are encouraging us all to use Steemit responsibly.

" I try to keep my resteems to specific topics that I also produce content in."

Now that makes good sense, to avoid the potential hodge podge you could have otherwise. I think I will adopt that for myself.

I upvoted this post. May it be seen more widely!
