I think there are two separate problems - one is being able to "filter" content that you don't want to see, and the other is being able to selectively view and customize what you get presented. I think they are working on other solutions for the second problem. We'll see soon when they post their roadmap :)
as far as I'm concerned the solution to problem two solves problem one also.

The solution to problem 2 that you are looking for is a fairly complex development effort though with a lot of "moving parts" to consider. Implementing something like that is going to take a lot of time.

Perfectly apt to describe Steemit at the moment.
solution #2 would solve that.
