How AI came about and how it will affect us Part 3
Hey there and welcome to Part 3. Today we'll be taking a look at if AI can be helpful or dangerous?! If this is your first time here you might want to check out Part 1 and Part 2.
Threat of AI
When we talk about AI in Pop culture we often refer the threats that AI comes with and if you think AI is out to destroy us then you're not alone. In January of 2015 Bill Gates, Stephen Hawking and Elon Musk signed a letter saying that AI will mark the end of humanity. The question is why?!
Well to put it simply the strong AI would develop at unbelievable rate that it will eventually outsmart us which in turn makes controlling AI almost impossible. A bad example AI being bad is the flash crash in 2010. At the time, AI machines working on the stock market predicted huge swing to take place. This was based on a single trade made by a company which ultimately lead to the DOW dropping 1000 points in just a few minutes. To put that into perspective a 1000 points is equal to a trillion dollars. When the AI realized the mistake it was quickly able to recover 600 points immediately but it's still a scary thought to think that AI can have such consequences on economies.
AI Isn't As Bad As You Think
However the head of Nuance Communication Charlie Ortiz said
I don't see any reason to think that as machines become more intelligent they would want to destroy us
A good example of AI would be using chat bots in psychology and researches show that people feel more open talking to AI as the AI doesn't judge you when you tell an embarrassing story. Those can be used for people with PTSD for example. Another benefit would be self-driving cars which when fully integrated can save around 30000 lives in traffic fatalities. Not only that but Auto Pilot in planes has been proved to reduce the risk of plane crashes by quite a good margin and that most of the plane crashes occur due to Human error. Maybe we'll start to see more creative AI like AIVA
I believe at present AI is going to make life easier. Everything around us is AI-based, including the search engine that we are using everyday, functions of typical smart phones. More are going to come: medical treatment, real-time translation, better computer vision and etc. The ability of AI to learn from experience is not really the same as the mankind intelligence. If we can make use of AI wisely and deal with the declining need of labor in a proper way, AI certainly does more good than harm in my opinion.
For sure it is going to make life easier. But AI is also threatening our jobs. Here is my article about it where i supported my point of view based mainly on a new study of Oxford and Yale university (31-05-2017)
