On the walls of Manchester United's youth academy, alongside large-format paintings of ex-members of the stove, now a photo of a non-Carrington man is shown. It was a picture of Lionel Messi wiping his shoes. Remember that Messi in the picture is not a prominent 12-year-old boy of La Masia.
The moment the photo was taken in the dressing room was in 2014, when Argentina played friendly against Croatia at Upton Park, England. In 2014, the moment that Messi won four Golden Globes and is considered one of the greatest players in football history. But Messi still clean his own shoes, as a young player in the academy.
The message that Manchester United's young academics share with The Times about the picture is clear: Great people are humble. Talent can take you away, but hard work and humility will keep you on top.
