Nobody is taking away the freedom to post. The purpose of downvoting is just to make sure that plagiarizers don't get any rewards.

I'm pretty sure that more damage is done to Steem when spammers get rewarded with articles that they haven't written themselves. Steem should reward original content, not copypaste.
If a spammer gets paid for copypasting, Steem will be full of them.
