Lured into oppression: Advertising manipulation
Imagine you enjoy the support of a whale, they love your content, comment regularly and upvote you to the moon. Pretty good times. One day, you have just written your latest post and are just about to hit the post button when you notice your whale patron also posted. You choose to read their post first and it is about the horrors of vaccination and the evilness of their usage. The post you are yet to send: "I just had my child vaccinated, Yay!"
Do you post it?
There are some pretty convincing and influential people out there in the Steem world pushing for advertising revenue but, think twice and then a few more times after that before supporting anyone who claims advertising is good for the system. It may be good for some bottom lines however, it is not good for freedom of speech.
The reason that so many accounts are being demonetized, banned, suspended and the like on other 'social' platforms is because of add revenues, not some authoritarian government. The greatest threat to freedom of speech is money earned on the commercialisation of content. Do you think that Coca-cola or Marlboro are going to support an influential speaker against those industries?
What are you willing to do for a whale vote? What is your price on your thoughts and words? Would you post your article on vaccination if you had a pretty good idea that it would cost you a consistent whale vote? Sure?
This is how platforms make money now, selling our collected data for advertisers to segment, then the ad space for them to target us with. We are the product the platforms sell, not our content. This means that their success depends on advertisers, not content producers. Content producers are just lures to land big whale advertising accounts and the school of fish to catch in their marketing nets. The ecosystem is completely designed for consumption, not expression.
You might be the most celebrated, rewarded and influential person on a platform but, as soon as you become a liability to advertising revenue, gone. Sure, they will make some drama about it and milk the process the entire way but it will always be the same, conform or be ejected from the system.
The new governments are not (and perhaps never were) those that were elected and rule the laws, it is the money behind them, the ones who lobby for this to restrict that. That is where the laws are made and when it comes 'societal acceptance', it is the advertisers who dictate what should be.
Look at the content out there and find what makes money and what doesn't. Look at the trends and you will see how narrow the pathway is and to stray from it is to be outcast. This happens on the left, the right and the centre pathways as with global markets, there is room for lots of segmentation.
You think you are different because you listen to some 'alt-news' service? Think again, they are advertiser driven also and if you wanted to have a differing opinion on a topic, you will be outcast again.
You cannot trust the opinions of people who rely on the support of opinionated positions for their bread and water as they are unlikely to bite the hand that feeds them, are they? Would you? If you were a whale supporting someone's content, are you mature enough to understand that people can have different opinions and still respect each other's views on other topics?
Advertisers do not care about the nuances of human existence where one person can have several views concerning various topics and often conflicted views concerning one. All they care about is the view that supports their ability to sell, or doesn't. And if someone does a good job of influencing others away from their product, they will use every trick they can to undermine and destroy the credibility of that person, group or rival. Truth matters little to advertisers.
Through their whale status, advertisers effectively centralise control by only supporting those who tow their line for their advantage. To play their game is to play the game that for centuries has been driving value to a very narrow point in the community, it is to support the conglomerates and it is to support the oppression of the many for massive gains for the few.
Does that sound like someone who is thinking what is best for a decentralised platform looking to empower content creators and diversity of thought? For those who want advertisers in on the platform, take a good, long, hard look at what they get out of it. Follow the money.
One of the draw cards of the Steem environment is the decentralised, uncensored nature of a platform that does not rely on advertising revenue of any kind. Rather, it (imperfectly) rewards content producers for being content producers and who that is decided by the community, not advertisers. To lose that factor due to short-term, influential thinkers is to lose the thing that makes Steemit unique, self-sufficiency. Where the money comes from matters a great deal.

Hmm...interesting question as I've never thought about trying to attract a whale vote. Haven't really written anything except what is on my mind at the time.
But if a Whale came along and said hey write about X and I'll make sure to give you an upvote worth $50 I'd probably be willing to write a post as long as it's not against anything I believe is correct. Wouldn't change my mind about posting something that I feel is important.
There is no problem working for money in my opinion, the problem is at what cost does one sell their ethics.
I always say everything is for sale, but you may not like the price. Guessing there is a number that makes me willing to concede my ethics, but that number would be way higher then any whale vote could offer. This number has only increased over the years as I had kids and I'm setting a role model for them.
This is important to me, and runs deep because I feel strongly about one of the issues you mention. This WILL happen to me, thanks for the preview.
My plan on steemit was to ignore, as much as possible, the crypto aspects, instead focusing on using it to put up photos etc. If you upvoted me it would 'mean' as much to me as anyone else doing it. Now that I know a bit more, I worry that it could colour my interactions. Does (70) make you a 'whale'?
That generous award I won on your page highlights the issue for me. Trying to learn about it, to pay respect to the gift/award, is taking me pretty quickly into the crypto aspects.
Even with my limited understanding, blockchain/crypto is VERY different for me. I haven't seen any other significant computer changes since I started playing with a Commodore 64
Actually a whale depends on value of wallet, I am no whale, just a little dolphin to get technical. The 70 is the Rep I have 'achieved' through the support of upvotes. I haven't bought the rep and has taken 1400 or so original posts to get this far.
Don't ignore the key aspects of the platform. It seems base to say it but, value matters here as much, if not more than the real world and is a driver for many good and poor behaviours. To ignore it is to turn a blind eye to a major influence.
Blockchain/crypto is going to likely drive some much larger changes in the near future. Learn what you can now and have fun doing it :)
You are right, of course. I had hoped to remove the influence, but that might be a model better suited to the old world. When I find you in chat again, I want to pull on your coat awhile and try to learn some things. I am willing to bet that I have a bunch of stuff wrong (exciting for me)
I can and do respect the opinion of others even if I was a whale . There is an old joke that goes like this .
would you do "X"
I would never do "X"
If I gave you $ 1 million would you
For $ 1 million sure
Now that we established that your are a whore it just a matter of degrees
We all sell our principles its just a matter of degrees . Some of us would just let the opposing view go others would cut them off . Once the opposing view dramatically effected our bottom line no one would continue to support the person making the opposing view . Matter of degrees . Advertisers have a zero degree tolerance . You may have a snowball in you hand but you will never , ever , be allowed to roll it down the hill .
Once bought, breaking away is very difficult and nearly impossible without loss.
I wish.
Nothing. If someone genuinely like my content, they can upvote or not. I f it's not working out for me, I will pack up and go elsewhere.
This is what keeps me posting.
Once that consistent support is coming though, can you stick to this?
Yep
Agree....we don't need or want advertising on Steemit. There is no need as Steemit produces more Steem and SBD over time to put more revenue into the system.
I think what is needed to keep Steemit running for the long time is to give an increased financial incentive to the newbies and minnows. Give a larger percentage of the SP and SBD for posting, curation and commenting. That will keep the base strong and the whales can also keep earning a lot as well.
The idea of steemit is to stay ad free, anyone who wants to promote something on steemit is free to do so on his own blog. But letting ad money in is the first step to becoming just another platform that lives off ads. I think things should remain the way they are now, creative and good creators are rewarded (imperfectly) for good content and people who promote products do it on their blog for their following. Hurray!!!
I think the magic of our current system is that ads would have to be implemented on the front end i.e Steemit.com and if we were unhappy with the adverts we could choose to use something like busy (who in this example decide not to), or have an ad-free frontend created as a community.
Overall I do think advertising could lead to huge growth in the price of Steem, but I’m aware that it would also require those that control the platforms hosting ads to take the payment in Steem or at least to convert into it.
Yes, this is the thing as various front-ends can introduce adverts but, Steemit need never. I heard that Busy is looking into it at the behest of Jerry, no surprises he supports ads.
If you believe in yourself and have confidence in your work I think you would talk about vaccines without any problems, risking losing the support of a whale, if you ask me... I would only read the other opinion and express my own, if they stop supporting me then maybe another whale will choose me as a favorite, however this issue has a lot to cut and maybe it can be taboo.
I hope the translator is helping me, I don't speak Spanish.
The person who pays you will rarely if ever accept a public opposite view. Should you express it? It depends a lot of how independent you really are. Would you say/do it even if you risk losing the financial support / job / club membership? Then you are independent in your actions. Otherwise you trade your independence for money or benefits (and to be fair, most of us do, and in most cases we call it job).
My, my. What a thought-provoking piece. Something similar almost happened to me, @tarazkp. Someone of higher repute approached me for a project he launched in Steemit. I was pretty damn honored that he reached out to me because, you know, he could be the big break that I was waiting for. Somewhere along our conversation, I asked him bluntly why he does the things that he does. That must've sounded insulting for him because he hadn't contacted me since. A part of me felt that I wasted a good opportunity while another part thinks that I saved myself from becoming one of those who echoes his thoughts blindly.
