Why you shouldn't upvote old articles

in #steemit8 years ago

Hey everybody!!

Steemit is getting bigger and bigger with new members coming everyday. These new members off course dont directly know how steemit works. Latest weeks I had a lot of members who were upvoting articles and video's of me wich were older then 7 days old. For this reason I want to give an explanation about upvotes in this article and why you shouldn't upvote articles older then 7 days old.

The idea of steemit is simple: you post something on the blockchain, people vote for it and you get a reward. The amount of the votes is depending on the Steempower of the voters. The higher their steempower is the more you will earn with your content.

People can vote forever on your articles but this is a waste of their votingpower. As I explained in one of my previous articles is that each vote you do will cost you 2% votingpower. Each day you regain 20% votingpower meaning that you can do 10 votes a day without getting lower in your votingpower.

But why is this a waste?
7 days after someone post content they can collect the rewards they earned with it. All votes wich come in after these 7 days won't give them any new reward meaning that the votes are useless. The only thing that it will do is take votingpower of the person voting.

So if you are new and see that an article wich you think is useful is older then 7 days then don't upvote it! It will only cost you votingpower!

I understand.....

On the other hand: if you really like an article from a year ago, it is in my opinion a nice gesture to upvote it even if it does'nt earn you anything...
Besides: replying tothis "old" post can be handy because that way it is easier to find back the article later.

I also noticed that....

It is not possible to "resteem" a post that is older than ( 7 days also? ) .
This is a drawback because many older posts can be of importance to others .
Besides it is a way of collecting valuable posts on one's own "timeline".
The way I do this now is copy the link in the browser and past it into a post on my blog, or paste it into something like Google Keep, Evernote or similar.

Good one on getting the word out again! This can not be emphasized enough!

completely true, the votes on an article older then 7 days are totally useless. but reactions are nice anyway.
