I have noticed many authors on Steemit posting links to their Bitcoin and Ethereum wallet addresses at the bottom of their posts. Does this work in anyway and is it advisable to act like a charity collector here on Steemit ? I wonder

It's not as relevant on steemit as other blog sites as there is a way to get donations but many bloggers use other platforms as well and got used to the "tip jar "
