So what's trending on Steemit? The answer may surprise you! @SteemitNetwork

While some post net over $100 in just an hour, others never even get 10 views after a month. Strange things do certainly happen on Steemit.

In today's post, @SteemitNetwork takes a look at the nature of posts which usually make it to the trending list on Steemit. Enjoy.

Is Steemit a social media platform or a blogging platform?

Before we even begin to wander about what trends and have does not on Steemit, we would want to first understand what Steemit actually is.

Is Steemit a blogging platform or a social media? Wikipedia offers a precise description of Steemit:

Steemit is a social news service which runs a blogging and social networking website on top of a blockchain database, known as Steem.

The promise of turning every activity of Steemit including posting, commenting, sharing(re-steeming) and even likes(upvotes) into cash makes Steemit certainly more confusing.

It is certainly no surprise that so many Steemians just do not know what to do on Steemit, as they spam and plagiarize memes and news contents just to make money. To answer the question, here is our honest review.

Steemit is a blogging platform built as a data client atop the Steem blockchain. Steemit does not reward users with Steem or Steem Backed Dollars - all that comes from the Steem blockchain. There are other Steem blockchain clients, with the most notable being busy.org.

And when it comes to being "social", Steemit is not that social. On Steemit.com, the only way to interact with a another Steemian is by following them or commenting on their posts. Busy.org takes social networking a step further by allowing direct user messaging.

Now that we have clarified that Steemit.com is a social user content generated blog, let's ask the second question.

What trends on other social medias and news sites?

The answers are quiet obvious. Social media is based on content created and shared by its users and for this reason whatever content would emotionally cause the readers to react to it. The consequences is that you would find out that click baits are what trends on social medias.

When it comes to blogs, blogging is difficult, news blogs are springing up daily, social media is keeping people from reading blogs and keeping up with the ever changing SEO rules is also difficult. Most blogger depend on revenues from advertisement yet advertisement revenues are shrinking. Most bloggers have to use every means to grow their audience with any any kind of content, be it sensational and fake news.

We know what trends on social media: memes. We know what trends on blogging and news sites: fake news.

So, back to the question...

So what's trending on Steemit? Frankly speaking nothing - nothing particularly interesting. If you thought conspiracy theories, viral memes, fake news and some new get rich quick ponzi schemes made it to the trending list, well sorry.

Your poorly written post about your new bicycle is perhaps not interesting enough to trend and certainly this post is too provocative to trend?!

Viral content gets lost on Steemit to relevant content.

The contents that made it to the trending list is made up of more mature content from Steemians with good reputation scores and the topics included Steem development updates, Steem fests reports and personal stories.

The next time you want to write a content which you expect to go viral on Steemit, remember to make sure it is relevant by being an personal story or Steem related.

In the left sidebar of the Steemit where the tags are located, you would notice that the top tags are:

  • life
  • photography
  • steemit

and not money, conspiracy or NWO.
