Good blog post, but I respectfully disagree.steemCreated with Sketch.

Yesterday @blakemiles84 posted a well-written and well-thought out blog/article on Steemians continuously making posts about how much they love Steemit. He made the point that it was a good thing and that we should encourage it. He stated that we should not complain about it as it is for the betterment of Steem and Steemit as a whole.

I would highly recommend giving it a read and getting the facts for yourself before you read my rebuttal. The article can be found here.

In a nutshell, though, he argued that it all comes down to these posts serving the purpose of marketing or ,as (s)he stated it, as ‘internal and organic leads for more investment.’ This would be where the two of us find ourselves in disagreement. Luckily it is on Steemit where having disagreements are not frowned upon but rather celebrated as it encourages engagement.

Before I give you my rebuttal, let me just state that I am not against loving on Steem as rule in general. Steem has brought something fresh to the world and should be celebrated.

It should, however, not be celebrated for personal gain. It defeats the whole purpose of Steemit’s entire existence as, at its core, Steem can only ever thrive through community involvement. Notice how I used the word ‘community’ and not ‘individual.’

And this is where I, and apparently many other community members, dislike the constant posts about how much everyone loves Steem. There is a sense that the majority of these posts were only created to try and capitalize on the appreciation others have for Steemit.

Furthermore, for Steemit to grow and stay alive, there is a requirement for constant, fresh and original content. When so many people keep on making posts on the same topics, the quality of the content will be severely diluted. This is not good. All you have to do is look at YouTube, a dying entity. Now I am sure there are many reasons for it, but I personally think that dilution in quality of content is one of those reasons. Too many YouTubers are constantly chasing trending topics and hence you are filled with a website of content about the same things.

As for blakemiles84’s argument that it serves as advertising, I can only partly agree. Yes, if someone has a good story to tell about why they love Steemit, it might encourage other Steemians to keep going and not give up on the idea. Other than that, I feel that those posts about how awesome Steemit is would serve a better purpose on other websites such as Reddit, Facebook, Twitter, etc. (As I mentioned in my comment to blakemiles84’s post.)

A product does not need to be advertised as much to people who are already using it. It needs to be advertised to those who are yet to learn about it. The effect (or is it affect?) of the advertising will be much greater outside of Steemit than it will be on Steemit itself. Those posters will then get a return on their effort with the growth of value in Steem as more people adopt the product.

So, in closing, I again want to say that I do not hate the concept of writing about how much you love Steemit. All I am saying is consider posting it outside of Steemit instead, where it might do less for you but more for Steemit as a whole. And if you feel you must absolutely post it on Steemit itself, then just make sure it is original and something that will add value to Steemit instead of something that will take away from it.

Thank you.
