Amazing, original post. The problems you mention are probably teething issues with the new way of doing social media. Systems will be tweaked etc. The self interest comes from several sources, one of the main ones is how Facebook has trained everyone to blow their own trumpet. When in fact, social media should be about OTHER people blowing your trumpet and telling the world how good you or your business are.
I do not think that it is Facebook who "taught" people to blow their own trumpet - it is in fact a natural tendency, Facebook just highlights it. On Steem, however, "blowing the trumpet" turns into "cashing your trumpet in any ways possible", which may take unexpected forms, depending on how the incentive system is configured.
