My thoughts on the recent Steemit.com changes

in #steemit6 years ago (edited)

Over the last week or so I have noticed a few changes on Steemit with some being more noticeable than others. Although they may take a little time to get used to I think the overall impact is positive.

There very well may be more than the three changes I have noted below, but these are the ones that have stuck out to me:

1. Confirmation page after submitting transfer of Steem/SBD
2. Removal of page views on posts
3. Removal of blog post rewards percentage when creating post

Confirmation Page for Transfers

Nearly all of us at some point have submitted a transfer that went to the wrong user, was the wrong amount, or had the incorrect memo. There is truly no way to prevent these from happening, but Steemit has helped to reduce the occurrences of sending the transfer incorrectly by the enhancement they have made. Previously, once you are at the "Transfer to Account" page and you click submit, if you have your Active/Owner Key already configured your transfer gets processed. There is no way to reverse or cancel this once it has been initiated.

Once you clicked "Submit" the prior way at this screen the transfer was complete

The new method does not allow to reverse or cancel the transfer once it has been initiated, but it forces you to review and confirm the transfer. This extra step may seem like an annoyance, but I can imagine if it saves you from sending a transfer incorrectly it will certainly be worth it.

Now there is a "Confirm Transfer" pop-up that appears after you click "Next" on the "Transfer to Account" Page.

Removal of page views on posts

Maybe my first shining moments on Steemit was a post I authored about the reputation score we all have and how it gets calculated. I also included a table with the Simplified Rep and corresponding range of Raw Reputation scores. Prior to the page views getting removed this post had been over 2,000 times the last time I checked. When thinking about what would cause Steemit.com to remove the page views on posts I could only come up with two logical reasons and one that sticks out more than the other.

  1. Every time the page was refreshed it counted a page view. Yes this was an issue, but it seems like they could have used a script for unique page views in order to calculate it.
  2. Due to Autovoters and Curation Trails sometimes, more like often times, posts would have more votes than views. As an outsider, I would definitely think it was odd if more people 'upvoted' or 'liked' a post than actually read it. I think this brings up a deeper issue that Steemit has and that is getting people to read and interact on content.

Removal of Selecting Rewards When Authoring a Post

There was once a time not too long ago when you could select the reward output when authoring a post. The three options that were presented were:

  • Decline Payout
  • Default (50% Steem Dollars & 50% Steem Power)
  • Power Up 100%

Having this feature was nice, especially for users who frequently declined payouts on their posts or if the SBD was fluctuating above and below the $1 amount. The rule of thumb here is to select "Power Up 100%" if the price of SBD is below $1 and to choose the Default (50% SBD & 50% SP) when the price of SBD is above $1.

Under the "Settings" and "Preferences" you can select your default reward payout for both blog posts and comments. Remember, if the SBD is below $1 change both of these to "Power Up"; Otherwise, it should be the "Default Payout".

Click on the profile icon in the top right and select "Settings"

Scroll down to "Preferences" and you can see the Blog and Comment Post Reward Settings

I'm usually using busy.org now because steemit is just lacking so much. It seems like they make these changes every now and then, but so many changes that are probably more important get left undone. Example - fixing notifications.

I miss those notifications greatly! Thankfully there are apps like Steemify and Ginabot to help with proper notifications, but Steemit.com should be able to handle these notifications it seems!

I'm glad to see Steemit Inc. update the Steemit UI, but I'm honestly a bit mixed about how I feel about it. Sure, I like the confirmation when transferring SBD or Steem, but I miss being able to see how many views a post had. As for the changes in ow to change the post rewards, having it in the Settings is fine; most people won't change them much, and it only takes a few seconds extra.

With the post reward settings I agree that it isn’t too big of a deal because like you said there isn’t a need to change it often!

The page view is the one that baffled me the most because I liked seeing how much traction a post got. Sometimes moreso after the post paid out and seeing it had thousands of views, but only received a few dollars.

Yeah, it was great to see when posts had picked up lots of views, and you knew that those posts indirectly counted for the success of Steem, since they must have gotten a lot of traffic from other websites.

You hit the nail on the head! There is only so much traffic that can be picked up on here by Steemit, but sometimes some posts would go viral on twitter or Facebook and this was one way to tell!

I noticed also that the "upvote post" checkbox is gone now. @ironshield

Yeah how bizarre?!? Maybe they want us to increase (or decrease) our curation rewards

Yep, that's probably correct. Steemit Inc. has said that they want curators to get a bigger slice of the pie, so it makes sense to get people to not upvote their posts right after publishing it. In the next hardfork the changes to the curations will make it less profitable to instantly upvote your own posts anyway, so this UI change might also have been in preparations for this.

That is a great point about not automatically upvoting the post instantly!

Have you heard when the next HF is coming??

I don't think there has been any official words as to when they will release the next HF. But they have been working on it for over a year, so it's about time for some updates soon :)

Has it really been that long since HF19? Feels like it was only a few months ago! Time flies!!

Well, to be fair, it was not over a year since HF19 was released, but it was 11 months ago. So we might see it being a whole year between the hardforks, unless they push it soon.

That’s close enough in my books! It is a little concerning there has been this many hardforks, but on the other hand it is pretty impressive it’s gone through this many and there haven’t been any major major mishaps

I agree with the changes steemit has made, so I don't see the number of views in my posts and I don't feel ignored hahahahaha. Okay, I would like them to add notifications when you are mentioned in a post

That is definitely the flip side to not showing the number of page views!

excellent contribution friend I liked a lot continuous so greetings

I love the introduction of the first feature as it makes it more reliable.
