Introduction to a good friend of steemit: Declara.com

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

Hi all,  thanks for reading me.

This is my second post, and I have to admit: I never posted so much before. But I believe that this is the place to do so.

My first post was about how steemit was the revolution Facebook could not create. Because Facebook rewards people with and from our emotions, while steemit truly rewards intelligence and content quality

It had good “reviews”, here’s the link here.

Today, let me introduce you to a great complement to steemit: Declara

Because before you can write something interesting, you probably need to read (a lot of) interesting things first.

Like steemit, the purpose of Declara is to read good content.

But one of the main differences, is that Declara is not originally a place where people write, but mostly where people share public articles from the Internet. (although you can write stuff on Declara too, it misses the voting system which makes steemit really unique)

In the end, please don’t see it as a competitor, see it like a very cool complement, a way to save a portfolio of articles you like, in many different fields. A please to read a selection of quality  articles.

Declara is a recent initiative as well, and I have been using it since the beginning of the year. It is truly an incredible tool with lots of great functionalities, some which steemit could get inspiration from. (That leads us to another question I will try to answer in a following post later: What does steemit need to do in order to pivot and transform for the better?)

So, as said: Declara, can be your repository for all the articles you read. Let's try to summarize how it works:

  • You can create what they call “Collections”, which are comparable to folders: if you see an article you like about the last iPhone9 on Wired, use their Google Chrome extension to save it to one of your collections called … “Apple” for example.
  • Once the article is saved you can select some insights which later can be “liked” by readers, and will serve as a short summary of the article when it is visible on the newsfeed. This function is very usedful, it allows you to get a very fast summary of an article, and decide if you want to read more, save it etc.
  • There is also an iphone app that allows you to find your curated content and and iphone extension to save article you read on safari on the site. The combination of the app and the site is very efficient.
  • You can “follow” people, so you get their curated content in your newsfeed. You can later also create “teams” of people you like or follow, people who you consider experts in certain fields, and allow them to curate on your collections too.
  • There is a machine learning engine under Declara, which helps you find better content from their site too. I won't get too much in detail regarding this functionality due to my lack of experience with it. (to get curated press articles, I use LinkedIn a lot, my contacts post a lot of interesting articles related to my expertise field).

As a conclusion, after a few days using steemit and a few months using Declara, I believe there is a great complementarity with Declara.

Declara would be the place where you read curated articles from the Internet,  and steemit the place where you write qualitative articles yourself.

(you can also share them on Declara… why not).

Going further, I believe that steemit needs to evolve a bit to became an even better concept.

I believe that steemit should inspire from sites like Scoop.it and Declara to also reward people who post articles from the internet. Probably in another section of the site, and certainly with less rewarding power than originally created articles, thus privileging the creation.   I will write about “what steemit needs to do to become even better” in a following article.

Please have a look to Declara, and I’d be happy if you can comment and give your opinions.

In the end, I believe opinions matter more than “likes”.

(another possible improvement for steemit?)

Thank you for your time reading this.  Truly.
