When @ned was at the STEEM Saturday in South Africa, he mentioned that they were thinking of a way to get advertisements onto Steemit to get more value onto the platform. I was thinking that you can get one advertiser per Tag Topic. You can post it on the top or the bottom as a banner, as per the example below. (Please look past the quality of my mock-up). I suggest that only one advertiser must be allowed per category, this will give the advertiser exclusivity, and won't flood the platform with a lot of adverts.
We can give the advertiser extra value, by also allowing up-votes and comments. In this way the advertiser can get direct feedback and suggestions on his products. If we allow the advertiser to also receive STEEM for up-votes, he will also get money back on his advert, and this will also create additional interest in STEEM, which can help with big business to also except STEEM as payment for products. If we require STEEM as payment for adverts, we will get them to buy STEEM with Dollars, which can help to increase the value of STEEM because of an increased demand. This will also require them to open a STEEM account. They will also earn Steempower that will give them a direct interest in the platform.
The advertiser can advertise on a category that is aligned with his products, thus people seeing his advert will be possible users of his products

Such banners would be intruding to me, my suggestion would be to allow some AD articles that will be held among the top in category and highlighted like that with min ratio 3:1 for "normal" vs AD articles.
For banner, maybe just some very small in the corner (not larger than Steemit logo with label and without animations only).
Anything more aggressive would force me either to block it somehow or leave Steemit.
