Hey great post, I was also confused by some of the things which you pointed out confused you.
Quick question about upvotes. Are all upvotes equal to those doing them or is there any incentive to be one of the earlier people to upvote? I guess basically what I'm saying is are you rewarded anymore for being one of the first people to upvote or notice a good quality post?

yes, the reward is higher if you find and upvote a post early which gets popular later but there's little to no reward for upvoting post that is already popular
Okay, figured so, that makes sense as you were on top of things and discovered it early and you voted on it before it was an obvious hit. That makes sense, been wondering about that so thank you for clarifying
Okay, I am no expert, lemme tell ya. Haha. But, I hear it's best to vote when a post is 30 minutes old! Hahaha, don't ask me why. I've got noooooo clue. I don't know if I'll ever be able to be so patient... Cause I forget to go back, for sure!

That's funny, there's lots of things I hear where people are like not sure why but its best to do it this way, but don't quote me on that lol. It is kinda confusing and overwhelming at first.
I guess the reason for my question is if I vote on something that already has 100 upvotes it's already popular but I thought there may be some incentive for spotting something you think will be popular before its gotten popular

How is the reward pool split between authors and curators?
Up to 25% of a post's payout is awarded to curators (the people who upvoted the post) as a reward for discovering the content. The other 75% is awarded to the author. If curators vote for a post within the first 30 minutes of it being created, a portion of their curation reward is added to the author payout. This portion is linear to the age of the post between 0 and 30 minutes. Therefore upvoting at 15 minutes old will donate half of your potential curation reward to the author.
Interesting to me, this says the opposite of what I said, that it's better to do it right away!
I read all these things and the reasonings behind it just don't stick with me. Haha
The "vote at 30 minutes" thing has to do with the algorithms for who gets how much in the payout. I've read it a couple of times so I sort of understand it, but I couldn't explain it.
Haha do you have a link to what you read? I'd love to try and figure it out too. Hahahaha. Cause I probably wont be able to QUITE understand it either.

Interesting. From this to me it says it's best to do it right away vs at 30 minutes. I wonder if I am understanding that right?
Basically what it is saying is that the closer you get to the 30 minute mark before upvoting someone's post, the more of the curation reward you get. If you upvote at 15 minutes, the author gets half of your curation award. If you upvote at 7-1/5 minutes after it's posted, the author gets 3/4s of your curation award. If you upvote a post about a minute after it's posted, you get almost none of the curation award. If you want to donate to the author, vote early. If you want to make the maximum curation award, vote at 30 minutes. Of course, the potential curation award is split between all the upvoters, and what you get depends on when you voted. If there's a lot of upvotes, and you're one of the last ones, say at 6 days after the post was posted, the curation award might be fairly large, but as a late upvoter, you won't get much of it. It's a weird system that has it's good parts and it's not so good parts.
