Spotify VS Steemit Payouts

in #steemit8 years ago (edited)

With the steem I made posting my music on Steemit I already made more money than most artist listed on the biggest online music streaming service Spotify. Giant music labels dictate the music business today and leave crumbs for the songwriters, performers and independent artists. In fact the music industry is in decline for more than a decade. With the internet revolution, many industries adopted the web, unfortunately the music industry could not catch up with the rapid changing times. When Napster arrived and started p2p music sharing big music companies decided to chase after and sue the music fan instead of embracing the technology that the web offered. For the first time anyone with an internet connection could enjoy music from all over the world in his own home. Today this problem is resolved with platforms like Spotify who collect revenue from online streaming and again the musician is the one whose intellectual property is violated and gets almost no financial return after all the time and effort invested. Of course music is an art form and is not intended to generate profit, but this does’t mean the people who actually create the music do not deserve their fair share of the pie.

In recent events Spotify posted a financial report.

It turns out an employee’s salary equals to 288,104,634 spins an artist must make to acquire the same amount of money. That’s only $0.00058 per spin. - Source

Steemit and the blockchain can fix this!

This is not actually correct. The calculation is how many streams a songwriter needs to earn that salary, not an artist. Artists are paid from the master side which generates a much higher royalty. The distinction is quite important. more info here on my post about Spotify.

Great breakdown! Seriously, blockchain needs to solve this issue for artists. I'm working on it, too with Tatiana Coin. :)

Even if it does not come from Steemit a new wave of platforms will emerge that will replace the dominating sites for artists like Behance, Soundcloud, Deviantart, Etsy etc. that incorporate direct rewards like Steemit is doing right now. It's a matter of time. It would be great if Steemit alone could solve these issues, but it's highly unlikely .Steemit is just a blogging platform and is already changing social media. Doing only that is a huge success. The implications are tremendous.

We need to get the word out to them! So, how do we do it? :)

I was wondering the same thing. I think most musicians and artist would really appreciate steemit if they knew about it.

I agree... the earning potential here for them has to be higher than just about anyplace else... by a significant margin.

the masses trust mostly the dinosaur business structure, someone at the top who runs the show taking them in so they can be fed their stipend.
Crypto offers a way to sovereignty, and this is scary for the masses.
It immediately conjures up visions of big brother coming down on you...
so they shiver in fear.
BTW, Tatiana, I adore you.
Will be doing so for quite a long while I hope. :)

It's awesome to hear its working well for you.

Hopefully being able to cut out the middle man will allow more people who create to benefit directly from their work

That's great! @stephenkendal , for one, is interested in these experiences.

This is really good news... resteemed.

Good to know I will resteem!

i love spotify as an user but since i know some people in music business i heard its worth money only for the big artists. youtube is better for artists than spotify right now

this may be the case, but not all musicians create music videos or use youtube
