You can choose the reward type for comments now on steemit.com and you can upvote your own comment with a checkbox
Seems that Steemit.com have rolled out an expansion on the control we have when commenting so it matches the control we get when posting.
So now we can choose between the Default 50%/50% rewards, Power Up and we can also Decline Payout. This is good and I don't see a downside really. Of course, with SBDs pumping, it's not really a prudent time to Power Up as getting SBDs and converting them to STEEM afterwards would give you a significantly higher rewards. But having control over this is, on the whole, an upgrade. More freedom is not really a bad thing.
But there is a bad thing here
But why do we need the Upvote post checkbox for comments. The community has been talking about self-voting, especially self-voting worthless comments as a bad thing and now the steemit interface provides an easier and faster way to do this? I see this as counter productive and detrimental. While I think upvoting your own post when posting it is something that is already part of the culture here on steemit and it's something I do with all of my posts, I don't think comments should be treated the same.
Of course, we are all free to use our Steem Power the way we see fit (and face the consequences), but I really don't see a good reason for the steemit interface to encourage self-voting comments like that. And having this checkbox in the interface would surely encourage the practice, would make it more common and could be used as validation for people that are giving themselves rewards that way.
At least, self-voting the second you post is more honest than self-voting at the last possible second to diminish the chance that you get flagged.
Could this be a mistake?
This was actually my first though and I think it's not impossible that this is just somebody mixing up the two post functions in the interface and adding the additional functionality that wasn't really intended, but let's see. I for one thinks it would be OK for the reward dropdown to stay, but I'm really not happy about the self-vote checkbox.
As I haven't tested out the functionality yet, I'm going to test it out in the comments here, so I don't spam other people's posts with nonsense. And all the functions seem to be working properly.

Let me power up a comment 100% and do what I just preached against and test out the self-vote checkbox...
The idea is indeed funny. You upvote a comment because you agree or like it. But if you write it yourself, of course you agree or like it! What is the point of upvoting your own comment :)
You made exactly the point I was going to make. Thanks!
I think most people upvote their own comments because they want the earnings. It's not something that is really against any rules, but I do think it's quite unhealthy for the platform as a whole. That's why I'm not that happy about it being encouraged and validated by the interface.
yes indeed! I should have changed my sentence, what is the point of having the option to upvote your own comment, ofcourse you like it!
Oh, I see, sorry for misunderstanding you then :)
Resteemed, Upvoted and Following. Thanks for your valuable post
Thank you! I'm glad you think so!
I stop self Upvoting my comments. The only exception is if I want my comment to rank higher in the feed line
That's a good policy and if you want to rank your comment higher, you can always decline payout and make it obvious to people that you are not just doing it for a bit of steem.
Have you noticed the feed seems to be working better?
No, I haven't. In what way?
It seems like authors that I really follow are showing up more.
It's possible there are changes being made, I just noticed the search function just got a facelift.
Let me see if I can decline payout for a comment and how it would look like...
Cool. So it still goes to the top even though you've declined payout.
Is there a visual cue to show a 100% comment, akin to the little steem logo on posts?
(This comment is 100%)
I've edited this, but cant edit my selection, which is obviously a wise move.
A visual queue to show that a comment is powered up instead of 50/50 is missing. But now, if people want to make sure that their comment is high up in the comment section, but want to claim that they are upvoting it just for visibility, they can now put their money where their mouth is and decline payout. ;)
Oh and thank you for wasting a bit of voting power on experimenting with this here! :)
It's good to be a gangster ;)
I'd hit a lot harder if I wasn't leasing out 57K, but I can't pass up yield AND growth.
Well that's a lot of steem :) It's good that there are people willing to invest and to keep their money in the platform like yourself then!
Better than parking it in fiat and watching it slowly rot away to inflation while being taxed for the privilege :)
Silver, Steem or collectable thimbles. All beat fiat hands down
LOL! That's a good one :P
Self voting comments also to me is not a great idea.
Some people upvote some of their comments because they want it to be on top so that many people see it,may be its an important announcement or something related to that!
I have already said that the control system is not good. My proposal would be to prevent the author from voting for his post. I have seen many times that someone who has voting power puts a photo and gets 2 or 3 dollars in a vote. All this is repeated several times during the day.
Stopping people from voting for their own posts will not stop people with steem power to give money to themselves if they wanted to. They would just need a second account to post from and they would upvote that instead of their own. So allowing people to vote for themselves if they wanted to actually keeps things more transparent without really exacerbating the problem significantly.
I'm not sure people need any more encouragement to upvote themselves. I think there is quite enough of that going on already. Being able to promote your comment and decline payment is a good idea though.
They don't but unfortunately the updated steemit interface makes it easier for them to do so. But what can you do. In the end, people are going to use their SP the way they see fit and that's that...
Amen to that, it's as it should be. Each to his own deviancies;)
Ha ha! Well said! :)
Thanks for this news sharing:)l wait for your next post:)
