The DDoS Attack Was Actually A Good Sign - We Are On The Right TracksteemCreated with Sketch.

It's time for a feel-good Steemit post from me too! ;)

A few days ago the most popular way to interact with the Steem blockchain was under a DDoS attack and was taken offline for a while. While this might have been frustrating for the time being, I see it as a good sign for the future.

First of all, DDoS attacks are probably the easiest to orchestrate, but are also the most benign. They can take a server or two offline for a while, but they can't really lead to security breaches and are not impossible to protect against when the proper infrastructure gets put in place afterwards or during. So looking at thing long-term, something like that is just a temporary nuisance, but not really a big deal that puts anything in real danger.

But getting a DDoS attack is an important indication - it means that Steemit is doing something right and competitors are noticing. It shows that Steemit is large and valuable enough of a target for somebody to invest resources into trying to disrupt the service for a bit. Another motivation might be that somebody is hoping that such an attack would influence the price of Steem and would allow the perpetrator to speculate on the market armed with the knowledge of when the attack would start and when it would subside, but I don't find this very likely.

Whatever the motivation for the attacker was, I think while a DDoS attack is not something that worrying, it is a good indication overall. I guess the SMT announcement is helping Steem move on to the next level and some growing pains might be coming with the territory. On the whole, I'm quite optimistic and I'm happy to be a part of the growth of this blockchain.

The attackers motive we might never know.
At least it show that the infrastructure is decent enough to recover from an attack like this.

Maybe perhaps the attackers tried to lower the price of Steem tokens.

The infrastructure will actually prove itself if the next attack goes unnoticed and doesn't bring the site down. DDoS attacks can't last forever and they simply have to eventually subside and when they do the sites can go back online even without upgrades. But I'm sure upgrades were made and the defense towards this type of attacks has been shored up.

Very good post @rocking-dave. Steemit have pass this "test" with success and this is very important.

I agree, this was also a test and I'm sure this has led to an upgrade of the infrastructure Steemit runs on.

Thanks for dropping by and leaving a comment, mate! :)
