Akasha: Is it a Steemit contender? My first impressions

in #steemit7 years ago

Have you heard about Akasha?

Their main page describes Akasha "As a decentralized application AKASHA deploys a next-generation information architecture born from the fusion of Ethereum and the Inter-Planetary File System. Thanks to these technologies we were able to create a planetary-scale information network immune to censorship by design, where your thoughts and ideas will echo throughout humanity’s existence."

So if I was in Middle-east or China, will I be able to access this technology to share my thoughts? And do what, keep my information in the open blockchain to get my head chopped in the 'chop-chop' street?

If that is not so, and you cannot access this in countries that prohibit social media, how different is it from Facebook or other social media?

The existing problem with internet is not holding information for eternity, it is quite the opposite.

In fact, I think we need to clean up the all data on internet, at least, blog data every so many years so that people can say it again or say it differently, otherwise, like the submarine that blasts because of compression from the weight of water above it, we will all one day feel the overload of Ethereal data and we will know it is not so light!

Essentially, Akasha is an amalgamation of LBRY concept of decentralized (and non-server based) content distribution and Steemit concept of 'rewarding' the content developers. Both concepts are amazing on their own and does not result in anything new with Akasha.

Can we take it lightly? No, we cannot.

Why?

This picture, see who is on board? Sometimes names and brand that the names carry matters.

Second reason is this concept has been in works since 2015 and with a team as strong as above, if they figure out how to monetize (and that is a big IF) - we might be looking at serious dent in Steemit's popularity base.

Competition is good thing only when we are on the side that takes advantage of competition. For this reason, we Steemians should test out Akasha and come back and see if we can EMULATE anything on Steemit and make Steemit even more robust.

The reason is simple.

By the time they hit the main-net - we should be so far away into future that Akasha (or any other Steemit TYPE project) should be looking into sky to watch us as we shoot to Mars and then to Jupiter while they are still aiming at moon!

You think I am just preaching?

No my dear Steemian. I went ahead and installed Akasha and tested it out.

Here are my further impressions:

  1. The installation was easy.
  2. They give you 5 AETHs to get started, however, it costs that super-amazingly-freaky GAS to post the article!
  3. Once posted, it is automatically copyrighted and your AETH clock is shown to see if you have made any AETHs or not.
  4. Overall navigation is bit crude and unguided.
  5. It runs on your system in an app mode rather than having to access a website.

So once again, we don't have to get too concerned about Akasha being a competitor for Steemit, at least not yet.

Do test Akasha, come back and share your thoughts/experiences and give a shout out to our Steemit core team to make enhancements and make Steemit robustly ready, for Akasha or any other future emulated projects.

Opinion. Not an advice.

@rkreddy: I heard about it recently, but never looked into it. Thanks for sharing.

I've got it installed too but it doesn't seems to have the same activity than Steemit :P

Nice posts @rkreddy!

Yeah and interface is not as dynamic as ours but remmeber their selling point is being NOT on a server and their advisory group is BRANDED!

we have to wait and see what transpires!

Here's another one...

Like cryptocurrencies, I predict that in a few years blockchain social media sites in one form or another will be everywhere.

Just my opinion :o)

Your opinion is spot on, I already saw something else this morning which is in works - that almost 100% emulates Steemit! This only means - we are onto something big, if we maintain the quality!
