অনেকে ওইসব গাছ কেটে বাড়ি নিয়ে যান জ্বালানি করবেন বলে। এই গাছ থেকে কোনো ক্ষতি হয় কিনা তা তারা জানেন না। স্কুল ছুটির পর ছাত্রছাত্রীরা ওই গাছ থেকে ফুল তুলে বাড়িতেও নিয়ে যায় খেলার জন্য!

সরকারিভাবেও পার্থেনিয়াম নিয়ে তেমন কোনো উদ্বেগ নেই।

কোথাও কোথাও স্থানীয় যুবকেরা খোঁজখবর রাখেন। তারা মাঝে মধ্যে পার্থেনিয়ামের ঝোপ কেটে পরিষ্কার করেন। পরিবেশ রক্ষায় কাজ করে ভারতের বনগাঁর একটি সংস্থা। গত বছর তারা বিভিন্ন এলাকায় পার্থেনিয়াম কেটে পরিষ্কার করেছিল। সংস্থার তরফে ধৃতিমান বিশ্বাস বলেন, পার্থেনিয়াম কী ক্ষতি করতে পারে, তা বেশিরভাগ মানুষই জানেন না। ভবিষ্যতে আমরা মানুষকে সচেতন করতে কর্মশালার আয়োজন করব।

বনগাঁ মহকুমা হাসপাতালের সুপার চিকিৎসক শঙ্করপ্রসাদ মাহাতো বলেন, পার্থেনিয়ামের ফুলের রেণু বাতাসে ছড়িয়ে পড়ে। শ্বাসপ্রশ্বাসের মাধ্যমে তা মানুষের ফুসফুসে পৌঁছে যায়। এর জেরে শ্বাসকষ্ট, অ্যালার্জি, হাঁপানি হয়।

গাছের পাতাগুলো গাজর পাতার মতো দেখতে। যেখানে জায়গা পায় সেখানে গজিয়ে ওঠে। মানুষের তো ক্ষতি হয়। গবাদি পশু ও ফসলেরও ক্ষতি হয় এই গাছের জন্য। গরু-ছাগল গাছ খেয়ে ফেললে জ্বর ও বদহজম হয়। খেতের পাশে গজিয়ে ওঠা পার্থেনিয়ামের দূষণ থেকে ফসলের উৎপাদ‌ন কমতে পারে বলেও বিশেষজ্ঞদের মত।

এই গাছ পুড়িয়ে ফেললেও রেণু উড়ে গিয়ে অন্যত্র বিস্তার লাভ করতে পারে। পরিবেশ কর্মীরা জানান, পার্থেনিয়াম গাছ মাটিতে গর্ত করে পুঁতে দেওয়া উচিত। পার্থেনিয়াম এলাকার মধ্যে দিয়ে গাড়ি নিয়ে গেলে বাড়ি এসে গাড়িও ভাল করে ধুয়ে ফেলা দরকার।
