Steemit statistics – What does the average user on Steemit look like?
(The Puffin Post) The question how the average user on Steemit looks like, is not easy to analyze over Steemit itself. Steemit has plenty of analyzing tools, which stretch from all kind of blockchain data over to new registrants, new posts, the activity level and the users steem funds.
However, to analyze how the average Steemian looks like and if he or she matches the target group, Steemit is aiming for, is nothing the Steem apps data could answer. As this data is not being requested when you sign up for Steemit. A simple approach, yet time consuming, could be to go through hundreds of introduction posts and write down a few stats, like gender, age, occupation, interests etc.
Yes, such a sample could be interesting in order to verify a few important aspects, not only for marketing or any other strategic purposes for the Steemit team, but also for writers on Steemit, who might wonder, who they are dealing with:
- Who is reading my articles and from where?
- What content could they be interested in?
But I didn’t go through any introduction posts for the approach I chose.
For those of you, who never stumbled over a tweet from my twitter handle “The_Puffin_Post”, this twitter account promotes your Steemit articles day and night on twitter. It sent of 200k tweets so far. It sent over a hundredmore while I writing this post. While the account will not gather a lot of followers, as it just would space up the main page of a follower, due to the massive amount of tweets it sends out, it takes on a different function. Due to the massive amount of headlines, you can easily stumble over “The Puffin Post” tweets, while searching for something on twitter. The account reaches significant impressions on twitter. Similar to Google, the longer Steemit exists the more articles on all sort of topics will be out there and that will give Steemit more and more tailwind on Google search results (which is also beneficial for the Steem price). Same applies to twitter, if the Steemit content is linked there.
These tweets promote the articles outside of the Steemit community, which also trigger beautiful reactions. To give you one nice example, my promotion of @v4vapid ‘s book review of "How I Lost by Hillary Clinton" on Steemit, which was written by Joe Lauria (Julian Assange wrote the foreword of the book btw) was retweeted by the author himself.
Steemit tweets reached over 5 million impressions
As my twitter account was offline from mid-March to mid-May, where I did not find the time to reset it, here is an overview on the impression the promoted articles reached from August 2016 to February 2016 and of the few days it ran in May.
So since I started to promote Steemit content over The Puffin Post twitter account it’s tweets reached over 5 million impressions, at times over a million a month. I am looking forward to the June number.
September 2016 - starting the twitter bot
October 2016
November 2016
December 2016 - getting closer to the aim of 1 million
January 2017 - reached that aim
February 2017
March 2017
92 day period starting Dec 1 2016
Back to the question: How does the average Steemian look like?
Now, to figure that out, I am assuming one thing. I assume that the people that are attracted by the content, which can be found on Steemit, will be very likely be the ones who stay on the platform. So looking at the statistics of twitter, as here we can grab information twitter gathers, can give a rough idea of how the typical consumer of Steemit content looks like, which, I believe, highly overlaps with the typical Steemit user.
Without further ado, let me show you the stats of the typical Steemian:
Gender of the typical Steemit user (see made assumption above)
Lifestlye - Interests of the typical Steemit user: Business and news, technology, tech news etc. – sounds about right
Languages of the Steemit user
The percent figures of German and Spanish seems about right, in comparison with offered content here in those languages.
Sorry, South Korean User you did not appear here. That the English dominance in these figures is higher than on Steemit itself, may just be the result of the high popularity of twitter in US.
From where is the average Steemit user?
How old is the average user?
He/She is end of twenties, beginning of thirties
What regions were identified?
This might only be interesting for US users in order to see in which state, you are very likely to find another Steemian.
What devices does the average Steemian use?
This figure points out, that if you want to use Steemit in a fast manner with all it functions, including typing long blog posts, you will not be happy with a mobile device.
Average Steemian:
To sum it up, the average Steemit user in 2017 (will be interesting to scan upcoming years for changes) is from the United States and male. He is around 30 years old. His lifestyle and top interests involve business, news and technology. Instead of leaving a mobile footprint he uses Steemit over desktop computer or his laptop.
Are you this average Steemian user? Let me know.
What do you think does the target group of Steemit look like? More international?
I hope you find these figures interesting. Do you think they are accurate? What is your feedback? What changes do you expect over time? Do you think more women will find their way to Steemit or will it remain as uneven, due to the hurdle of a too technical website?

This is so interesting. I'm definitely NOT the average Steemian!
I'm a 24 year old Female, Living in the U.S. (Utah)
So I guess the US thing is accurate LOl.
Cool :). Thanks for your response! In my case the age, the interests and the devices I mainly use fit. Cheers!
Very nice article. I was looking for something like this to decide on which subject should I write. I'm also not the profile at all but probably because this crypto world (and steemit along) is just arriving to the rest of the world. I'm a woman & chilean (hehe as my nickname), and 31 years old.
I would probably be launching a small survey in a couple of days, through steemit to complement this. But yours is a very good analysis.
I forgot to hyperlink that twitter handle. But I guess it fits well into the comments too, so here it is: https://twitter.com/The_Puffin_Post
A big thank you to you for your powerful upvotes on this article @ausbitbank & @novina
