What Steemit Needs is an App System!
Steemit needs an App System, as soon as possible. Yes an App System just like any other social media has. But preferably inspired by the one Facebook uses.
Facebook has integrated their Facebook Credits token with their App System so they can charge you credits or give you credits by playing games or using their 3rd party Apps.
This is exactly what Steemit needs, since the price of Steem is plummeting. We need to add demand to Steem, and what better way there is than to let 3rd party people add their Apps to Steem.
There are already many Apps at SteemTools, but they are separate tools. We need to have them inside Steemit, as a Javascript/HML5 type of App.
There are of course security risks added with this implementation, but if the Apps are vetted properly, then the risk can be minimized, furthermore I believe the upside is bigger than the downside. It can make Steemit big.
Steemit is just a platform, we need to let other users to contribute with Apps and Tools for it. We can't expect everything to be done the by Steemit devs. We need to let 3rd party enthusiasts create their own tools for Steemit, and then add them into a new "Steemit Apps" system.
Firefox has Addon system, Chrome has Addon system, Facebook has App & Games, Twitter has App system, even Reddit has it.
So we have to recognize that a platform is a platform, and it's up to the community to build on it 3rd party tools.

Totally agree. This would require a big investment from the Steemit.com devs though to begin with, and maintenance of the system.

Not that much. Just code the platform system, and create the sandbox to limit the app's privileges, like twitter.
Everything else is done by the 3rd party designers. What kinds of apps and ideas will there be, is up to the peoples imaginations.

That would definitely be a good thing! Since Steemit presents itself as a "social" platform, we really need to have more integrated "social features." It's all good and fine that there are independent providers/creators... but if people need to run 17 different apps to make Steemit "work" for them, most average users will simply look at the platform and say "too much work, too complicated" and head back to Facebook where everything is already in ONE place.
It would be optional apps like games, or other stuff. It would not be required to be used for average blogging. Just something to enhance the value of Steemit and above all, make Steem , the currency useful.
You may be on to a future selling point. Isn't that the sort of thing that FABRIC is being created for?
